Richland-Lerdo School District reports early gains in parent participation through a contract program. In grades K through 6, 301 contracts show parents committing to monitor homework, discipline, and schoolwork, with 276 endorsing discipline, 190 schoolwork, and 14 assisting beyond the classroom.
A Kern County judge ruled in favor of the City of Shafter in a long running water company case involving Sellars Water Co. and creditors. The decision leaves questions about liens, funding, and future water service as the city continues efforts to replace aging systems in North Shafter and Smiths Corner with grants and new infrastructure.
Kern County and its cities report sharp drops in June building permits with Tehachapi and Delano showing steep falls. Bakersfield and Wasco rise year to date while Arvin jumps due to prior large projects. overall county totals reflect a weak construction economy with some pockets of improvement.
Donald Lee Bellows 22 of Shafter died in a Barstow accident on August 9. He was a 1989 SHS graduate, employed by Delano Logistics, and lived with his mother in Germany before returning to California. Survived by his father David Bellows of Virginia and other family members.
An informational meeting for all parents of band students in grades four through eight will be held Thursday, Aug 26 at 7 p.m. in the Richland Band Room. Band Director Ken Gross will outline goals, expectations, performance dates for the beginning, intermediate and Trojan bands. All parents urged to attend.
