Mrs Claud Newsom departed Shafter to establish permanent residence in Wichita Falls Texas where she previously lived. She has run the Newsom Furniture store since her husband died last April. The store’s new owner is W M Brannan.
Visiting the Perry home in Shafter is Mr. Perry’s sister and husband Mr and Mrs Joe Terrell from Kingfisher Oklahoma. They have stayed two weeks and will remain one more week. Also staying through Tuesday is Mrs. Perry’s sister and husband Mr and Mrs Walt Roughan of San Francisco.
Mr and Mrs Melvin Parrett left the first of the week for a week of vacation at the coast.
Major Ruth McCann of The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters in San Francisco met the local Shafter Welfare Committee to discuss the State Service Extension Program. The group coordinates health welfare and cultural activities with funds used locally and for broader programs in California and Nevada.
Wasco Union High School adds Jack Burtner as coach new staff member. Burtner, a San Jose State graduate, attends a two week coaching workshop at California Polytechnic State College San Luis Obispo sponsored by the California Association for Health Physical Education and Recreation taught by national sports authorities.
Ralph Woods seven year old son of Mrs Doris Woods rests at home after a three week hospital stay for an appendectomy. He is reported to be getting along fine. Mrs Woods teaches kindergarten at Richland Primary School.
Mr and Mrs Harry Thompson and children Bill and Mary left last week for a vacation trip to Canada to visit relatives and spend time with family.
Mr and Mrs F R Rice return ed to Shafter on August 8 after a week in Anaheim and Hemet visiting relatives and old friends. They reported very hot weather and favor Shafter climate.
Mr and Mrs Dan Loewen and daughters Jo Anne Doris and Sevella returned Monday evening from Yosemite National Park where they spent the weekend at the resort enjoying the scenery and recreation.
Captain James R. Rosenstiel returns to duty with the U S Air Force after a 45 day holiday, stationed at Castle Field near Merced. His wife Lois Berry, former Shafter postmistress, will stay in Shafter. The couple sailed home from Okinawa aboard the General S B Buckner July 1. They visited Oregon with his mother and brother in Portland, and enjoyed a Los Angeles reunion with Okinawa friends Fumiko Higa and Haruko Shimaboku who were later identified as United States citizens born in California.
Mr and Mrs L W Bergman and daughter Kathy joined Mrs Bergmans brother and wife the Bill Hildebrands of Shafter at Santa Barbara for the week end. The Hildebrands vacationed on the coast and the group enjoyed a full week end at the beach and the glorious sea air.
The Rosenstiels described evacuation of service dependents from Okinawa after Typhoon Gloria. An army officer in Okinawa reported widespread devastation and housing loss, with dependents moved to Tokyo or sent home to the United States. Mrs. Rosenstiel called the tropical postings an engaging experience but welcomed returning home.
