Thompson seedless raisins will be the next crop harvested in Shafter as favorable weather supports early picking next week. A survey shows heavy crop maturing with minimal mildew while large grape bunches develop and few burned patches appear.
Recreation coordinator Eugene Ford of Shafter announced a drive for magazines and radios to equip the army recreation room in the county building on Pacific avenue. Magazines may be left at city hall while a separate drive collects radios for airfield rooms east of town. Local residents donated four small radio sets last week as part of Kern County seen commerce organization backing.
The Kern County Seed Potato Association continues field inspections of western seed stocks to curb ring rot and mosaic. First inspections run until August 10 with follow ups through September and a final approved list due November 15. Growers may apply for inspection, pay a small fee, and obtain reports via the county agricultural commissioner or Ed Peters.
Continental Oil reports ongoing coring at its wildcat project northwest of Shafter in sand below 12800 feet. Unofficial word notes poor showings so far with the outcome to be decided in days. If successful the discovery could open a new nearby field amid months of difficult drilling and interest from local residents in mineral rights.
City council considered the 1941-42 budget Monday at City Hall with plans to set a tax rate at the next meeting. The body will sit as board of equalization Aug 25 26 and 27 for property hearings. Assessed valuation rose by 90815 to 898685 and a new fire truck down payment is planned for this fall. Mayor Phil Channeson and councilmen Nay Lachenmaier Frizzell Midgley attended.
F. R. Buchanan of Glendale visits Shafter and is described as the world’s largest honey producer with over 3000 bee stands and annual output of 100 to 200 tons. He moves bees to the San Joaquin valley near cotton fields for cotton honey and shares lifelong bee-keeping history and visions sparked by California’s bloom-filled landscapes.
Routine matters were discussed at the Shafter Business Men's Association noon luncheon held at Stringham's drug store. President Joe W. Frizzell presided.
Future Farmers of Shafter high school prepare nine Hereford steers and 23 Corriedale sheep for the California State Fair in Sacramento August 29 to September 7. Local entries include Calvin Roberson Carroll Hansen Kenneth Burkhard Fred Starrh and the school farm entering open division stock and crops. Rail shipments start August 26 and staff will attend events and judge stock with confidence from last year's high honors.
U S O building plans hinge on 5000 plus troops at the Shafter airfield east of town. George Martin, inspector, and Eugene Ford, local recreation head, report a federal visitor recently reviewed the site and a second may come soon. Current signs point to the command reaching over 5,000 men shortly.
Superior Ol. company announced the Osborn 1-4 well location 330 feet north and east of the section 28 center in 28 25. The project is slated as the next spud in the field. Pasadena Realty No. 5 reached 11 037 feet Tuesday. Griffith No. 2 between Shafter and Greeley fields was at 6 939 feet. KCL No. 18 Brush pasture wildcat was at 12 065 feet Tuesday.
The Shafter district farmers completed planting 200 acres of Chinese mung beans the week of harvest. The beans, sown with a corn planter at 6 to 7 pounds per acre, are used for sprouts in chow mein. Farmers A H Bryant Menno Siemens J K Mendrun and A F Isaac hold contracts to market the crop at about four cents a pound, a favorable price.
Draft Board No 137 announced ten men to be sent to induction stations in the fifteenth draft call. They will depart Wasco on Tuesday August 19 by Santa Fe bus. Names include John D McCord Stockton Negro Shelby Donl Campbell Shafter Cleo Gerald Price Whitefish Montana Guadaloupe Navarro Reyes Delano James Riley White Delano Herbert Newman Shafter Donald Jake Ratzlaff Shafter Floyd Gillham Mc Farland James Raymond Andrews Pond and Johnny George Gaede Shafter. Draftees from other Kern county boards will leave August 18 19 and 20 from various communities.
A sound motion picture Goodyear Shoulder Arms was shown Tuesday noon at the Shafter Rotary club meeting held at Motel Cawelo. Lyle Reil of Bakersfield presented the film about defense efforts in the rubber producing industry. Ted Vignolo chaired the event with guests Art Hill L. B. Jeffries and Leonard Fayle among attendees.
Water shutoffs at several homes in Shafter were postponed after the board and L Black, superintendent of the Shafter Public Utility District, discussed delinquent accounts and possible resolutions with district officials.
Bids totaling 85 houses to be built four miles east of Shafter opposite the United States Army airfield will open August 25. Rents range 27.50 to 40 dollars monthly, with 60 year payout at expected rates. Cadets arriving tomorrow join Class 42 A for basic training at the field. The project may shift to low income housing if army uses the houses later, with possible subsidies.
A Shafter man visiting Morro Bay slipped while descending Morro Rock sustaining bad bruises. Peter Isaac slid about 60 feet and was rescued after several hours. He shows rapid improvement and will be transported home to Shafter in a few days.
Union Oil reports Pacific States 21 33 well reached 10 786 feet in Section 33 on the Shafter field edge. Morgan 81-14 operating below 9 765 feet and Kerneo 56-2 in Coles Levee field stood at 6 487 feet.
Foundations were poured yesterday morning for the new cafeteria on the Richland school grounds off Shafter highway. Foundations have been poured for the new school bus building off Poso street. The bus building should be ready by school opening in September, while the cafeteria will be completed later.
Construction progresses this week as painting and fixture installation wrap up at the new Santa fire house. Work includes wall finishes and electrical fixtures with final completion anticipated soon.
