The Shafter Public Health Department lists August clinics at 329 Central Valley Highway. Immunization Clinic is walk in August 14 3 5 p m. others require appointments. Health events include Child Health Family Planning Pregnancy Screening and Senior Health screenings with dates August 10 14 17 23.
Streets and an alley in Shafter will be resurfaced in coming weeks. Construction began last week with a two inch street overlay and a two day grinding phase to level gutters. Six streets and one alley are listed including Sunset Munzer James Euclid Faber Fuller and the alley behind General's Headquarters.
The Kern County Administrative Office released a 1.3 billion dollar recommended budget for 2006 2007, a 159 million rise over last year driven by higher oil prices property value growth and more state and federal funds. The plan adds 150 new positions across departments and outlines road and capital projects including a Rexland Acres sewer system and a new Emergency Operations Center. Public review and comment will be shaped by an Aug 28 evening session and Aug 29 budget hearings.
Kern County declares the seven day heat emergency expired after two weeks, with departments to monitor residents. Approximately 115 tons of cow carcasses buried at Arvin Landfill will stop under non emergency rules, requiring rendering or cremation elsewhere. Waste Management aims to relocate large carcass disposal to Shafter-Wasco landfill only in emergencies, with 24 hour response crews.
The Shafter City Council renewed annual agreement with Kern County to collect special assessments and taxes at no more than $1 per parcel. It also adopted the National Incident Management System to handle emergencies, aligning with California’s SEMS and established a Sept. 5 public hearing on Tract 6437 Engineer’s Report with cost estimates and assessments.
The Shafter Children’s Summer Theater presents its 11th show Cinderella on Saturday August 19 at 7 p.m. at the Fred Starrh Performing Arts Center Shafter High School admission is free. Cast includes kindergarten through eighth grade children with 50 actors and a teen crew aiding behind the scenes in a child led production.
