Fourth Lerdo escapee captured in Bakersfield
Eddie Bustamante, one of four Lerdo Male Minimum Facility escapees from June, was caught in Bakersfield near 3701 Q Street after a 50 yard foot chase. A glass meth pipe, shotgun, marijuana and scales were found. He faces multiple charges and $345,000 bail. Female driver released. three other escapees already captured.

Two medical technicians and a doctor from National Health Services Inc assisted a woman who delivered a healthy baby boy in her car outside the Joy Carino Kimpo Women's Health Center on James Street. The mother and newborn, weighing over five pounds, were taken to Kern Medical Center. Police and emergency crews responded.

Kern County declares local emergency over extreme heat
Kern County issued a seven day emergency proclamation due to a severe heat wave. The order allows disposal of dead farm animals at the Arvin landfill and postpones general public access while rendering plants in the valley are overwhelmed. Farmers may choose landfill disposal for 70 dollars per ton or compost on farms with 24 hour notice to Waste Management.

Cooling centers to stay open during power outages in county
With a record heat stretch and rolling blackouts, Kern County keeps the Shafter Veterans Hall open as a cooling center with power and AC. Other centers on emergency power include most, except North of the River Veterans Hall Ven Aus tin Senior Center and Wasco Recreation Building, per Parks and Recreation director Bob Lerude. The Cooling Center program aids elderly and disabled residents, coordinated by the county Parks and Recreation and Adult Aging and Services departments.
