Shatter Well To Be Tested In Deep Miocene Sand

Union Oil drills deep wildcat Shatter well KCL 114 south of town. Hole cleared and 58 inch casing cementing at 10,269 to 10,310 feet. Operators freed stuck pipe before walls caved in and froze. Awaiting test of deep sand to confirm a major discovery rivaling the Greeley field.

Work Commission Extends Filing Date for Wage Forms

The Work Commission extended the deadline for form DE-852A to August 31 and for form DE-352A to the state offices. The forms concern wage earnings of employees under the unemployment reserves act and mirror SS-2A. The extension reflects employers delaying data tabulation for the first six months of 1987.

Driver Flees After Crash Injuring Duerksen's Passenger

Following the collision Myrick's corner passenger was hurt. The driver turned off lights and sped away, with no license plate obtained. Descriptions of the fleeing car vary and Miss Duerksen suffered a severely injured back. Duerksen's car was also badly damaged.

Oscar the curious dog sets out through Central avenue

A dog named Oscar on California street sought the world after reading vacation literature. He wandered to the middle of Central avenue where heavy traffic confused him. Francis Coffman came to the rescue and assisted Oscar to safety.

Milo maize gains acreage as second crop near harvest

Milo maize spreads across more than 500 acres in the area as favorable weather helps the two foot tall crop mature. Harvest is expected in November with growers optimistic about strong local and Bakersfield markets. Landowners include Bill Mettler Bill Handel J. J. Siemens and Dave Wittenberg among others.

A comparative report by librarian Mrs. Thomas Wedge shows July 1937 attendance nearly doubles July 1936. Adults borrowed 752 books vs 787 in 1936. 205 non fiction 508 fiction 39 magazines. Juveniles 591 withdrawals with 218 non fiction 335 fiction 43 magazines. juvenile books circulated 525 in July 1936. Reading room visitors 431 in July 1937 versus 292 in July 1936.

State fish planting totals reach over 9.4 million

The Division of Fish and Game notes June stocking across lakes and streams with 8,387,790 trout and 1,100,160 king and river salmon released. Fishermen in Shafter return home empty creels, but officials say the drought and season affect catches rather than stocking numbers.

New Building Planned for Central Avenue Frontage

H. B. Morris, Delano merchant, visited Sheer Tuesday and said he bought 50 feet on Central Avenue just east of the Central Market from W. A. Howell of Bakersfield. Morris plans a modern brick business building 50 by 100 feet on the frontage.

Kern County vows to fight diversion of gasoline taxes

Kern County will challenge in the state supreme court any move to divert gasoline tax revenue to repay welfare relief loans from the state. Assistant District Attorney H A McGinn said the county will repay its first installment of about 21000, after county auditors refused to pay from local tax funds. The board seeks a ruling on proper loan repayment methods and opposed diverting motorist taxes from road maintenance.

Grapes Shipped To Canneries From Shafter District

Thompson seedless grapes from the Shafter district begin shipments today with the California Packing Corporation cannery at Oakland receiving the first cars. Growers report an exceptionally good yield and high quality with most fruit testing over 18 percent. Earlier this week several carloads of boxes arrived at the local station, signaling upcoming shipments and favorable prices.

The West Coast Preview committee from Women’s Clubs of California, American Legion Auxiliary, California PTA, and Southern California Federated Church Women graded films for Shafter Theatre this week. New High School Unit Contract Let

Kern County Union High School district trustees award contracts for three new classrooms and a central heating plant at Shafter High School. Total cost 28000 dollars, with 18000 for classrooms and 10000 for heating plant to be built beside the new gymnasium. Completion date not set.

Standard Marks Locations For New Greeley Projects

The report details several oil and gas ventures in the Greeley area. KCL 116, the northern producer, flowed 2000 barrels on a short test and was throttled back. KCL 1114 yielded ten million cubic feet of gas with 36 degree oil from 7705 to 7815 feet. Spudding began on KCL 11-7 one quarter mile south. Foundations for KCL 11-8 are poured in section 18 three quarters of a mile west. A wildcat on the B lease, KCL 12-2, was staked out a mile northeast. The project sits in the northwest corner of section 16.

Vernon 8 Langdon former Shafter resident and brother of a Shafter peer died in the South at age 48. World War veteran who had been ill for seven years before entering Sawtelle hospital. Survived by his wife Mrs. Clara Langdon of Los Angeles two brothers Jay and Charles in Oregon and sister Katherine in Oregon. Funeral with military honors set for Friday morning at the soldier's home.
