Seka Gheeay Economic Opportunity Corporation announced a 1.3 million grant from the California Youth Authority to build a Shafter Youth Center. The project aims to complete in about 18 months after contract signing, with city planning underway and 264 statewide applications.
The TSST grants fund up to 45 dollars per student to support digital learning. Aimed at expanding vision for school systems, the program covers over 1,100 high schools that have become or will become digital campuses.
Mari Hiebert, longtime Shafter community leader and city councilman, died Aug. 1 after illness. He ran an automotive service in Shafter for 33 years and lived in Kern County 42 years. He was a Valley Bible Church member and active in the Shafter Kiwanis Club.
Dick Wegis of WAY Farms in Buttonwillow will host a Monsanto Centers for Excellence field day on Thursday Aug 5 1999. The 8 am start includes a sponsored lunch and draws farmers and agribusiness experts from the San Joaquin Valley. The event promotes conservation tillage to boost yields and reduce costs while protecting soil and water quality.
