Election tabulation shows 14 260 against and 11 699 for a 20 cent tax rate increase to 1 25 per 100 assessed value. Districts Buttonwillow Pomistte Richlend Upper-Crade reported mixed results with several towns voting no while others approved the increase. Ballots counted from 132 precincts at the county election center.
The Shafter Merchants drop their third straight loss and fall to 9 losses against 1 win after a 10 to 1 defeat to the Bearcubs Fair. West Kern leads the league with Bearcubs second as Greenacres battles to the end and yields a 7 to 1 ninth inning collapse.
Loss J. E. Klassen of 135 West Tulare reported to Shafter police that $300 to $400 in cash and several checks were taken from his residence recently.
The Richland Board of Trustees cut expenses by 15 421 and boosted income via higher taxes and secured revenue, leaving a projected deficit of 18 915. A final budget vote Friday at 7 30 p m in the Richland School Library will decide further cuts and cafeteria policy.
Charles McGinty, a McFarland councilman and longtime grocer, opens Value King in Shafter next to Foster Freeze. The six day a week market offers meats fruits vegetables frozen foods and some drug items with Bill Callahan as butcher. Clu Gulager will appear Saturday from 9 30 to 12 for free autographed pictures.
Bill Decker said Monday that a senior life saving course may be taught at the Richland Pool if enough interest is shown. Registration is set for Wednesday at 11 a.m. and classes run from 11 to 1 for the next nine days with a minimum of six participants needed to organize the course.
A state college area is defined by boundaries Taft Highway Lerdo Highway Edison Road and West End Lane. The March State College Board sub committee proposed the area between Shatter and Bakersfield as the recommended broad zone. The exact build site within this general area has not yet been pinpointed.
Announcement reports H. Sach Kelly elected to the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America and to the regional Boy Scout Council. He is president of the Kern County Council and active in Scouting across Kern Inyo and Mono Counties, with a long career since 1914 including the Silver Beaver award in 1961.

The Shafter Research Station accumulates 35 years of weather data from 1923 to 1958. Key figures include a 12.92 inch yearly maximum rainfall in 1957-58, a 1.71 inch daily high on March 3, 1938, and a 117 degree high on August 14, 1933.
Shafter officials recorded extreme humidity and rainfall in late July with highs near 90 to 91 percent and 82 percent on consecutive days. Rain totals reached 21 inches on July 30 and 10 inches on July 31, marking only the third July rainfall in 43 years and a season total of .31 inches for the year.
Mrs. Betty Lee Stone of 432 Atlantic Avenue attends a Purdue University summer course in basic economics for young children. Prof Lawrence Senesh of Purdue directs the program Our Working World using pictures and classroom projects.
Four hubcaps were taken from J. T. Dunkin's car while it was parked at the bowling alley between Shatter and Wasco. No suspects listed and no injuries reported.

Avever 19 has been coined for the final fittings of mouth guards for players at Shafter High. Fittings will occur on Tuesday August 10 on the high school campus. Each guard costs $1.50 and must be paid at fitting. boys not fitted will bear the cost. Principal Harold Corrie notes.
