Elk Corp draws 3000 applicants for 90 Shafter jobs
Elk Corporation plans a 150000 square foot asphalt roofing plant on an 87 acre site at Lerdo near Hwy 99. About 3000 people applied for 90 openings as the company prepares to start operations before year end 1994. The firm projects 140 employees at full capacity and ships products to eight Western states. John G. Freshwater will run the plant as VP and GM. The city pursues Enterprise Community designation with up to 3 million in federal grants. Congressman Cat Dooley supports the effort and a public briefing is set for Aug 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Thieves stole a VCR, jewelry, tools, guns, and about $200, but returned items after tips from neighbors and a resident sting.
