Parents educators and Migrant Education Program members gathered to honor seven weeks of study in Math History and Science by migrant students at SHS. Under English Chair Barbara Hays their efforts earned high school credits while working 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. in fields and studying 4 30 to 8 30 p.m. weekdays.
Trustees voted to eliminate six 6 hour Special Education Aide positions as a cost saving measure saving about 11500 dollars annually by reducing hours. A plan to rehire aides in six hour roles was announced with layoff notices and reemployment rights to be issued by the superintendent. News includes past costs and state funding limits for special education and notes related school budget actions.
Shafter launches its first all-girl softball team coached by Chigger Allen with 15 players aged under fifteen from local recreation leagues. Merchants donate $50 each to cover uniforms and tournament costs as the squad heads to Franklin Field Taft for a Round Robin against Taft Earlimart and Tehachapi. The public is invited to support the team whose win advances to Los Angeles.
A Friday blaze near the intersection of ae Diego ice in wa ter burned 360 tons of baled straw, a Minneapolis Moline tractor, and a cotton trailer from noon until about 11:30 p.m. Fire officials cited $7,500 straw damage, $500 to the tractor, and $150 to the trailer, with the fire spreading from the trailer floor to the straw and hay barn. Noble Howze owned the pole barn. El Monte Hay Company owned the straw. Shafter and Wasco fire units responded, containing the fire after a lengthy effort.
