Pioneers and Businesses Shape Shafter’s Early Growth
In 1914 T V Little arrived in Shafter to found a town that grew from a modest school and eight scholars into a thriving community. Over 15 years he built a substantial garage and shops. Nickkel, Caulfield, Stringham, Grant, and others followed, opening filling stations, drug stores, groceries, and the Safeway branch. The piece notes town founders’ recollections of desert life and the rapid townsite development after 1913.
