DMV study favors administrative traffic adjudication in California
A DMV task force reports that moving minor traffic cases from courts to Department of Motor Vehicles hearing officers would cut costs and speed adjudication. Net annual benefit projected at 13 million dollars with possible gross savings of 25 million, while start-up and operating costs total about 15.2 million. Public support for the shift runs 71 to 77 percent, and the study cites safety gains from early detection of hazardous drivers. The effort follows Senate Resolution 40 and involves judges, court staff, and lawyers.
