Shafter teams stay undefeated in the South Sequoia League after a 100-63 boys win and a 121-32 girls win over Corcoran at the Shafter pool Friday. A Friday visit to Wasco looms as a pivotal meet, with Wasco undefeated at 4-0 like Shafter’s boys. The Tigers, led by coach Bob Smith, eye a strong outcome.
Shafter High varsity track tied for first in the small school division at the Kern County Relays in Bakersfield. Randy White Al Meyer Mark Keeley and Danny Lopez led distance medley to a 10 32.0 school record while White ran a 4 18.7 mile. Rick Poplin ran two miles in 10 34.2 and Wasco shared the trophy.
Shafter youths ages 8 to 16 must register Saturday between 9 and 10 a.m. at Stringham Memorial Park behind City Hall. A 1.50 registration fee is charged per participant, per Mike Schmidt, Shafter Recreation Director.
The California Commission on Aging will hold a public hearing May 6 at the VFEW Union Hall in Delano to discuss elderly health needs and alternatives to confinement. Testimony runs 9 00 a m to 2 30 p m with public comments to 4 00 p m. The hall sits at Mettler Avenue and Garces Highway three miles east of Delano.
Shafter high school baseball, led by coach Mike Nichols, dropped to 2 7 after losses to Wasco 13 4 at Hudson Park and Coalinga 4 3. The Generals rallied briefly but three unearned runs in the third doomed them, with Wasco scoring in an eight run second inning en route to victory.
The Shafter Generals upset Corcoran 36 to 12 at North Kern to notch their first South Sequoia League win in three years and move to 1-3 on the season. All six golfers scored in the 40s led by Keith Ballengee with 42. others included Taffera 45, Gio vanetti 47, Berkshire 49, Wells 48, Bryant 47, with Bryant tying his opponent. The squad also beat McFarland in league play earlier in the week and next faces Coalinga at North Kern at 4 p.m.
Fishing for all species in the area remained strong before the cold snap. Bass and catfish action was fair to good at Buena Vista Lake with White Tornado lures and night crawlers producing bass up to 4 1/2 pounds and several catfish over seven pounds. Crappie and bluegill fed well at Nacimiento and Margarita lakes as bass started spawning, while San Antonio Lake showed hot redfish and bass fishing. Anglers reported good catfish activity at Lerdo with clams and anchovies as top baits.
Nine Shafter junior wrestlers aged 8 to 14 clinched titles at the Kern County Junior Wrestling Association finals at South High. Most victories came by pins as Lopez, Leonard, Jones, Froehlich, Delgado, Haworth, Kennedy, Criswell and Rambo earned titles in eight weight classes amid a day with about 900 competitors.
Summer harvest tips urge planting tomatoes peppers and cucumbers, while notes highlight Indian Hawthorn as a profusely blooming foundation plant. Local nurseries stock best area varieties and are currently selling them.
Kern County National Farmers Organization members heard that hay prices are higher than reported and grain producers nationwide are being contacted. Dave Kroeker, Wasco, was elected president. Ed Crawford and Ed Fisher spoke as cotton and grain chairmen. regional updates noted California counties already starting outreach with Kern imminent.
