City officials and Rep. Cal Dooley outlined a plan to apply for Enterprise Community designation aiming to bring up to 3 million in grants. Mayor Linda Gragg emphasized job creation and revitalization, while Dooley pledged advocacy in Washington for fair treatment and grant success amid national competition.
The Shafter Police operate from old City Hall during renovations at Sunset Avenue. A Citizens Charter Advisory Committee meeting is set for April 28 at 7 p.m. at City Hall to discuss general law cities and local problems. Four year old Aaron Morales-Rios of Shafter was awarded a $250000 settlement for injuries from a June 22 1993 accident on Los Angeles Street. Eloy Zuniga Moya 35 of Shafter drove at 55 mph when the boy darted into traffic. The speed limit on that 30000 block of Los Angeles Street has since been cut to 35 mph. Morales-Rios incurred about $187000 in medical costs with brain injury, hearing loss and blindness in his right eye. Moya received no citation.
A University of California Bakersfield study yielded 17 recommendations for Richland Lerdo School District, urging preservation of the current four-location system as one large school. The plan considers consolidating grades to save transportation costs, with eight research-based approaches analyzed for improvement and four flagged for further teacher input.
Former Shafter Police sergeant Raymond Curt Swope, 36, will get a new trial after a hung jury in the 9 to 3 verdict on charges he assaulted a 21 year old Bakersfield woman during a New Year’s Eve party in Shafter. He was arraigned January 14 in Delano and is set for June 6 retrial.
