Effective May 1 2012 Shafter Scenes will publish free community events for two front page weeks excluding school registrations. Fundraisers must place a minimum 2x5 ad for one issue to be published for two weeks. Rates 6 PCI Shafter Wasco 9 PCI Shafter Wasco. Call 746 4942 for details.
Local groups announce events in April May and June including a Chicken Bar-B-Que at St. Marks Anglican Church on April 29 from noon to 3 pm at 295 Beech Ave dine in or take out call 746-2843. First Presbyterian hosts an Old Fashioned Night at the Theater May 10 at 6 pm free admission at Truxton and H Streets with organist Bob Salisbury accompanying Wings.
Mary Chavira chosen as 2012 Cinco de Mayo Grand Marshal for Shafter. A Richland teacher for 33 years she taught fourth through sixth grades and led summer school programs. Born in Phoenix, raised near Delano, she spent years migrant teaching Kern County high schools before settling in Shafter. She mentors students through CSUB workshops and MESA, celebrated after Chevron grant support. married to Frank Avendano with three children and seven grandchildren.
The Shafter City Council on Tuesday April 17 handed out several awards to citizens. Mayor Garry Nelson proclaimed April 28 as Relay for Life Day and Cinco de Mayo Days, with attendees including Rhonda Jones and Donna Ward and Cinco de Mayo Committee members. Proclamations also celebrated Distinguished Young Woman of Shafter finalists Carli Preston Eva Viss Amanda Mosely Aubrie DeLaRosa, who was named Distinguished Young Woman of Shafter.
Golden Oak Elementary held a Friday Spirit Rally to honor Tiger of the Month winners across kindergarten through sixth grade and to boost CST test spirit. Kindergarten honorees were Alejandro Pena and Joel Martinez. first grade winners were Anthony Velasco Ashlynn Martinez and Galileo Fruto. third grade honorees included Emiliano Guzman and Michael Montiel.
