Mrs. Neufeld ends a long career at Richland after teaching for 36 years. She began teaching late due to caring for her ill mother and delayed education eight years after starting work at 14. Born in Kansas to a Russian immigrant couple, she was one of 11 children and later moved south with her family.
Rain spoiled outdoor sunrise services expected for about 1000 people. The crowd, washed by showers, relocated to the nearby Pentecostal church for sunrise worship indoors. Polio immunizations reminder issued for second shots next week.
Shirley Mae Mansfield experienced a life threatening sleep episode at her north Shafter camp home. The county fire department inhalator squad arrived as she stopped breathing and revived her with oxygen before she was taken to Mercy hospital in Bakersfield where she emerged from a coma after eight hours.
Miss Billie Wright announces an adult evening swimming class at Richland Pool beginning Monday April 29. The four week program runs each Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and is open to women who are beginners or non swimmers.
Deputy sheriffs nabbed Rex R. Pearson and Lloyd Lafevers, both 23 to 28 from Oklahoma, after two hitchhikers were robbed on Highway 99 near Mc Farland. Victims David Young of Napa and a companion say the suspects bragged of more crimes and demanded money and a wrist watch.
The merchants division of the Shafter chamber of commerce and agriculture will meet at 7 o clock tonight at McMahan’s furniture store. President Smiley Burnett announced several important matters are scheduled for discussion.
Capt Palmer announced the Sky-Watch will be discontinued though the GOC will operate in ready reserve. Volunteers at Shafter lookout will be kept on file for emergencies and occasional meetings will continue. Interior posts deactivation relies on DEW radar for rapid recall within 24 hours. Opal Evans heads a 100 plus member unit.
Shafter Fire Department chief Ed Wimpy Bender announced the fire truck is back in service after a monthlong layoff for repairs. The 16 year first overhaul included pump tank and hose bed work boosting pumping to 596 gpm and pressure to 127 psi. repairs done in Oakdale, California, the truck’s origin in 1941.
Dr Garff Wilson official greeter and UC president's aide will speak at Shafter Rotary Tuesday noon at the Canelo motel on Teahouse of the August Moon. Club president T N Anderson opened the meeting to wives of Rotarians. Charles West of Coberly West Co will be program chairman.
A community testimonial honors Ralph Gribble retirement after 35 years as Maple and Richland school district administrator. The event includes tribute by local leaders, a banquet, and remarks on his impact, with Mrs Gribble also recognized. Organ dedication at Shafter will honor agrarian pioneers and feature a 6000 dollar organ presentation to Shafter High School.
Eight teachers were granted tenure by the Richland school district board, making their positions permanent. The roster is led by Robert Snively, with Doris Bondurant, Dotty Boyd, Helen Green, Mildred Patterson, Annabelle Reynolds, Lois Robinson, and Lawrence Schellenberg also elevated. The board also accepted the resignations of Valma Miller, Louise Neufeld, and Ann Rothering. Next year’s appointments include Dolly ter and Sylvia Barker both from Wasco households.
Wasco chamber of commerce will be guests of the Shaf Chamber Monday at noon at the Triangle restaurant. Sam Becket announced the Wasco group in charge will present a briefing on Wasco’s 50th jubilee scheduled for next month.
Harry West was a Shafter pioneer and influential figure who built a regional farm and business empire spanning Kern and Tulare counties. He loved horses and owned a vast collection of horse drawn vehicles preserved by his widow Ethel. Born August 13 1885 in Traver, he studied at Kern Union High School and UC Berkeley where his roommate was Earl Warren. He helped found Camp West Lowe Farm Ginning and operated in Kern county beginning in 1911.

Shafter High School marks Public Schools Week from April 29 to May 3 with open class visits and a May 2 open house from 7 00 p m. The week features an annual Art Festival and final purchasing balloting. Plans are led by P L Arnold with help from James Wilson Glen Nay and Bob Gates. The week closes with the student play Harvey in the Shafter Auditorium. Richland School also announces a Richland Week with a spring concert and open classrooms, ending with a community dinner on April 30.
About 500 Shafter homes face violation for evaporating desert coolers without circulating pumps. SPUD officials say a 1957 ordinance bans non pump cooled units. homeowners have until May 9 to install pumps or replace coolers. The Shafter Public Utilities District oversees the water system.
Ed Wimpy Bender, inspector, reports improvement in fire prevention conditions in Shafter after touring business places this week. He aims to finish the work by month’s end, noting the pits of combustibles and rubbish in alleys as the most flagrant violation.
A 14 year old Shafter girl won the Kern County 4-H dress revue with a brown date dress and beige duster. Twenty girls received blue ribbons for excellence while Maple club members Nancy Bergman Marilyn Schellenberg Annette Herring Algertha Broom Marilyn Whitfield Karen Crigger and Sharrowing also modeled. The winner will represent the county in the all California Dress Revue at the state 4H convention in Davis next August.
