The Shafter High School Patrons presented The Music Man to near capacity crowds on Friday and Saturday at the high school auditorium. Ray Novak starred as Harold Hill with Martha Novak as Marian, delivering standout performances and a notable solo as My White Knight. The show, a hit on stage and screen, netted over 1500 dollars for scholarships and programs, with other cast members Pat Neuman Neal Olsen and a barbershop quartet also applauded for strong contributions.

Robert Somers 53 of Shafter died of a heart attack at home Tuesday. A 25 year insurance veteran, he recently became sole owner of Kelly and Somers Insurance Agency. Born in 1920 in Chicago, he served in World War II and belonged to the Lions Club American Legion and local church. Services were pending.

Eight Candidates Vie For Junior Rodeo Queen Title
Eight local girls aged 6 to 16 compete for the Junior Rodeo Queen crown at Shafter High School stadium on Saturday May 11.
