Early Spuds Roll From Shafter and Saco Fields

Potatoes continue to move from Shafter with 49 rail cars shipped yesterday. Digging is underway at Saco fields owned by Bob Newman and Bill Bestwater, with Bliss Triumphs in a 120 acre Neuman field. Yield runs about 200 sacks of No. 1 per acre, with prices around 1.10 a bag and market strength noted.

Kern County Junior Chamber to Elect Directors

Jake Siemens is a candidate for the Kern County junior chamber of commerce board of directors. The meeting to name directors and advisory directors will be held next Monday evening at the county chamber building in Bakersfield. Bennett Siemon, president, urges all members to attend.

Moore Well Completed By Superior In California Fields

Superior Oil reports Moore No. well completed between Shafter and Greeley fields on D C Moore property. Hole bottomed at 11,500 feet with oil sand at 11,300 feet. Estimated production likened to area peers with 1620 barrels of 37.3 gravity oil and 1,116,000 cubic feet gas via half inch line. Casing 1,525 psi tubing 1,500 psi. Next well Lewis No 1. Osborn No 3-2 location announced southwest of No 1-3. Derrick up at Crites No 4. Osborn No 1-3 below 10,521 feet. Pasadena Realty No 3 below 11,008 feet. No 4 drilling at 11,255 feet.

Third Crites earner for Union Oil near Shafter field

Union Oil Company announced a third well location at Arthur Crites property on the west side of the Shafter field near the northwest quarter of Section 28. The 43-28 well is south of the completed 52-28 and toward the west, aiming to widen the north field production area. Other reports: Pacific States 32-33 at 9,141 feet, Coles Levee field 78-2 at 9,432 feet, Stockdale 31-3 at 10,315 feet.

Miss Betty Mork a Shafter high school student represents Kern county in Fresno regional finals of the annual contest by the California Bankers Association. Her topic is Democracy's Challenge to America's Youth. A Fresno win advances her to the state finals in San Francisco with a trip to Hawaii for the state winner. Accompanying her are Sepulveda the forensic coach and fellow students Tarnan Reilly Grant and Ruben Mettler.

Students Back New Constitution At Shafter High

Shafter high school students approved revisions to the student body constitution by six to one in last week’s election. The main change would allow the student body to operate the Hi-Y stand on campus.

Nine More Votes Favor Incorporation in Shafter

The Shafter city council canvassed April 15 votes plus nine absentee ballots showing opposition to disincorporation. Official results: 385 against disincorporation, 166 in favor. The meeting also covered building concerns, a chicken nuisance, and health inspections.

Traffic sign promised near Shafter field direction

E W Taylor district traffic engineer for California highways promised a field direction sign directing to the United States army airfield east of Shafter at the Taft Greenfield and Shafter Taft highway intersection once a name is chosen for the field. He said a Shafter reflector sign may also be placed at the intersection in the future.

A fire in a refrigerator car on the Santa Fe siding south of Lerdo road caused about 300 dollars in damage shortly after 5 AM Monday. Two men, believed to be responsible, were arrested that evening by Fresno County police in Fowler after a description was issued by Constable John Reily.

Recreation Commission Plans Summer Program in Shafter

The Shafter Recreation Commission outlined initial plans for a summer recreation program with morning and afternoon child activities at Richland School and evening programs at Shafter High School. Local director anticipated, WPA leaders may help, and cooperation from Richland Elementary and Kern County Union High School districts is sought.
