Public Schools Week urged visitors to schools amid displays and programs marking a nearly 50 year tradition. Shafter's Potato and Cotton Festival pageant drew 600 at the high school auditorium with Anne Keeley crowned Miss Shafter 1975.
Two Shafter men jailed for tractor vandalism and theft
Shafter Justice Court Judge Harvey Gaede sentenced Gary McGowen and Travis Sherrell to 180 days in jail on each of two counts after their guilty pleas to malicious mischief and theft of vehicle. McGowen also pleaded guilty to burglary of a Safeway store and drew six months more, to run consecutively. Damages totaled about 9,000 to 11,000 across a Bloemhof Ag Enterprises tractor and two Coberly West Farming machines, with tractors found burned in a field near ScaronI and Seven in Standard.

Shafter High Students Return From Valley Forge Leadership Trip
A group of Shafter High School students and a counselor returned Wednesday from a seven day East Coast tour sponsored by Kern County Women’s Chapter of Freedoms Foundation. The party included Dr. Neal Olsen and students Almberg Arnold Lopez and Delgado who attended a Valley Forge seminar and Washington sights. Three junior girls Julie Bannantine Elisa Franceschi and Jane Parsons joined another trip from the county.
