Public Schools Week urged visitors to schools amid displays and programs marking a nearly 50 year tradition. Shafter's Potato and Cotton Festival pageant drew 600 at the high school auditorium with Anne Keeley crowned Miss Shafter 1975.
Shafter Justice Court Judge Harvey Gaede sentenced Gary McGowen and Travis Sherrell to 180 days in jail on each of two counts after their guilty pleas to malicious mischief and theft of vehicle. McGowen also pleaded guilty to burglary of a Safeway store and drew six months more, to run consecutively. Damages totaled about 9,000 to 11,000 across a Bloemhof Ag Enterprises tractor and two Coberly West Farming machines, with tractors found burned in a field near ScaronI and Seven in Standard.
Richland School District trustees approved submitting an application for funds totaling 216 521 with federal ESEA Title II at 1 126 and SR 0教育ally Disadvantaged Youth 39 780 plus Early Childhood Education 101 808. Insurance extension discussed but tabled. Four substitutes added Eleanor Orndoff Lesa Koehn Marlene Morris Kathy Olivier. Enrollment remained slightly down nine from last year. Superintendent Evron Barber reported enrollment as of Friday was not fully stated.
Almost 600 people cheered as Anne Keeley aged 18 won the 1975 Miss Shafter title in Shafter High School auditorium. Lori Bryant was alternate and Tracy Thompson first runner up plus Miss Congeniality.
City Administrator Bill Sheldon questions Warner Cable of Kern County figures at the continued public hearing on a $7 rate increase for Shafter and nearby cities. Discrepancies cited include accrual versus cash-based accounting and subscriber-based pricing. hearing adjourned to Thursday 7 p.m. with urging public attendance.
Warm air moved into the Shafter area over the weekend with highs of 74 on Sunday and 77 on Monday. The region recorded .43 inches of rain, marking the fifth of six weeks with precipitation and lifting the season total to 4.94 inches.
A group of Shafter High School students and a counselor returned Wednesday from a seven day East Coast tour sponsored by Kern County Women’s Chapter of Freedoms Foundation. The party included Dr. Neal Olsen and students Almberg Arnold Lopez and Delgado who attended a Valley Forge seminar and Washington sights. Three junior girls Julie Bannantine Elisa Franceschi and Jane Parsons joined another trip from the county.
