Citizens oppose LA Street zone change for apartments

At a public hearing before the City Council, residents voiced opposition to changing Los Angeles Street from R-1 to R-4 to permit apartments. The proposal, filed by J C Atkinson H C Hight and Bud Johnson, is reviewed with a Development Rights agreement. Councilman Bill Cummings plans to vote against it due to density concerns after canvassing nearby residents.

Three Arrested in Shafter Drug Raid at Lerdo Avenue

Shafter police arrested Nora Katherine Solomon 24 Kenneth Ray Knight 21 and John Flores 24 after a Monday night narcotics raid at 174 West Lerdo Highway apartment. Officers confiscated about $20 worth of heroin a small amount of marijuana 14 syringes two pipes and five heating spoons. Knight faced multiple charges including possession of heroin and narcotics paraphernalia and being under the influence of heroin. Flores was charged for marijuana use and Solomon for paraphernalia and marijuana use in a drug location.

Chance of More Rain Seen as Week Dims

National Weather Service Tuesday forecast shows a possibility of additional rain on Wednesday with diminishing chances for the rest of the week. An overnight shower at the USDA Cotton Research Station in Shafter measured .05 inches, adding to a season total of 4.50 inches, with daily highs from 62 to 76 and lows from 35 to 50.

Trio Sentenced for Armed Robbery of 91-Year-Old Man

Three youths from Shafter were sentenced to serve the first 179 days of an 180-day jail term after pleading guilty to armed robbery in Shafter Justice Court. They bound the 91-year-old victim, William H. Underwood, with cords and robbed him of a rifle and about $130, then fled.

Trustees OK twenty thousand dollar SHS restroom project

Shafter High School and Boosters Club won approval from the Kern High School District Board to build new restrooms at the SHS stadium on the home side opposite the current facilities. Architect selection was part of the plan and operation is targeted for the Fall football season.

Booth booth fee slash at Shafter Potato Cotton Festival

Ed Bender, chairman of the concession stand committee, says booth costs are cut from 20 to 10 dollars for the May 11 and 12 Potato and Cotton Festival to boost group participation. Interested parties may contact him at 746-4048.
