Ten-Cent Hand-Set Charge Eliminated in California

President Ray C Wakefield of the California Railroad Commission announced that the 10-cent monthly charge for hand-set telephones will be removed from bills after July 1 across the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph and Southern California Telephone systems in California. The change will save telephone users about 250000 dollars annually, and companies will invest roughly 450000 dollars in extra equipment to meet expected demand. Some customers with new hand-set instruments will pay the charge until July 1, after which it is eliminated.
