Shafter truckers confronted the City Council over a new parking ordinance, calling it unfair to truck drivers who rely on them for transportation. Mayor Grundy and Councilman Larson defended the measure while promising a careful review and possible revisions to ease overnight parking concerns for residents.
Funeral services for Susan Hahn seven year old daughter of Dr and Mrs James B Hahn were held at the Congregational Church of Wasco. Susie was injured in an accident at school Friday morning and rushed to Bakersfield where specialists performed emergency surgery in an attempt to save her life. She died Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The Hahns have three other children Marilyn aged 1 Barbara 13 and Jimmy who will be ten in July.
Shafter adds two more specially designed crossing signs following success of four already at Central and Munter and Central and James. Police Chief Hanley Witcher notes black and white diagonal and black and yellow signs curb auto pedestrian crashes with no reports since placement. The two new signs will replace ones at Central and Munzer.
Bank of America announces George L. Jones as assistant cashier and new lending officer at Shafter to replace Mickey L. Sarah who resigned. Jones came from Cloverdale after starting in San Francisco in 1946 and has risen through the ranks from note teller to junior officer and general lending. His wife Betty and daughter Claudia Millie will join him once housing is arranged.
Mrs Ben Laverty won the bale of cotton given away at the Shafter Boy Scouts annual Coffee Hour held at Memorial Hall last Saturday April 11. Spokespersons said attendance at Veterans Memorial Hall was smaller than hoped, but thanked supporters and noted late donations would be welcome to maintain the Scout meeting place.
Supervisor Roy Woollames will discuss the coming year's tax rate at the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture meeting Monday noon April 20 in the Shafter Motel Dining Room. Chamber president Roger Thuman says the discussion is vital for taxpayers and expects a large turnout. last meeting Tax Assessor Hanks and assistant John Watts spoke about new assessments.
California counties and cities facing fiscal year end cash shortages receive a state apportionment of 76,040,956. The payment, up from last year by 3,098,362, comes from motor vehicle license taxes and can fund general government. Kern County gets 819,973 and Shafter 11,996.
City Council approved the map and contract for Ermien s first section of 13 lots on Acacia Avenue. The 71 to 95 foot frontage parcels will sell from 2990 to 3990 dollars with a total tract plan of 22.5 acres and about 87 lots overall. A three man committee will approve building plans and water lines are installed for the initial 3.2 acres.
California records 7,626,989 vehicles registered for operation in 1958. The breakdown lists 6,043,483 automobiles, 876,336 trucks, 646,399 trailers, and 60,771 motorcycles.
Over 300 boys and 35 adults joined the North Kern Camporee on April 11 and 12 at the Charlie West property on Poso Flats Road. The event featured hikes skill exhibitions in knot tying string burning water boiling and trail blazing with awards presented by Richard Uhler and other district leaders.
The Kern Junior Academy and School organization hosted a flower show on Sunday with a gay nineties backdrop. Hosts awarded prizes across multiple student grades while elder couples honored for long marriages. About three hundred guests attended dinner amid floral decor as judges and clerks were acknowledged.
Mr Robert Vogel of the Friends Service Committee Pasadena will speak at the Richland Teachers Club meeting Monday April 20 at 3 00 p m in the Primary School Cafetorium. He will illustrate his talk with color slides from a three months tour aiding the project. All interested are invited to attend.
Superintendent J. W. Harris will attend the Public Works Institute in Monterey on April 16 and 17. The event is supported by the California Cities for City Engineers group and focuses on city engineering topics.
Annual open house plus PTA barbecue at Shafter High Tuesday April 21 features guided tours of school departments, department showcases, art exhibit and auction open to the public. Barbecue begins at 5 30 with coordinated staff by Ticket Chairmen and PTA volunteers handling meat cutting salads beans coffee and telephoning duties.
A bake sale is scheduled for Friday morning April 17 at the Central Church. Proceeds will be used for the church mission projects. The event will offer a variety of baked goods including yeast loaves and cakes.
