North America's only active tin mine lies in Kern County
The Kern County tin operation on Tejon Ranch land has its own mill and produced two and a half tons of concentrate in the last 30 days. Discovered in 1940, the Meeke deposit contains cassiterite in iron-rich veins with pockets of high tin content, and production since 1963 has totaled about 45 tons worth $75,000. The mill was moved from Wilmington, ore is shipped for smelting, and current on hand cassiterite totals about four tons as operators weigh future prospects.
