Six vie for 1974 Miss Shafter title at SHS pageant
Six SHS seniors and one junior were selected to compete for Miss Shafter 1974. Contestants include Vicki Bender representing American Legion and Carla Crawford backed by the Shafter Chamber of Commerce. Susan Franklin, 1973 winner, will crown the new queen May 11 and 12 at SHS auditorium with judges from out of town and cash and trophy prizes.

City Administrator Ordinance Sparks Council Debate

Easter at the Churches Plans bold Easter services in Shafter
Easter activities begin April 11 with Maundy Thursday services while Good Friday services are planned for April 12 at 1 p.m. by the Shafter Ministerial Association at Stringham Memorial Park band box. Music from various churches plus a brief Biblical message and a call for business closures are announced by Al Whaley, with the service open to all.

Shafter Crew Helps Fight $250000 Fire
Firefighters from Shafter joined crews from Minter Field McFarland Wasco Highland Riverview Virginia Colony and Southgate to battle a blaze that destroyed a World War II hangar at Minter Field. The loss was set at $250000 and the fire was ruled incendiary in origin. The Minter Field crew arrived at 6 20 p.m. and the hangar measuring 120 by 150 feet was about half involved. The fire was controlled by 8 20 p.m. with mopup crews remaining through the night.

Man Found Dead in Shafter Motel Room
The 56 year old James Mayfield was found dead in his motel room last Wednesday morning. Coroner's office ruled death from natural causes. Mayfield, originally from Illinois, previously worked as a night watchman at Joe O'Brien stables. His body was shipped to Mt Sterling Illinois for funeral services and burial. High Funeral Home of Shafter handled arrangements.
