Evolution of Shafter Cinco de Mayo festival site
The Shafter Cinco de Mayo festival began in the 1960s on Central Avenue and James Street in downtown Shafter. Complaints about heat on the asphalt led the committee to stage a parade and relocate the event to Manuel Park, where it has remained. By 1990 some committee members aimed to expand Cinco de Mayo into a major annual celebration.
