Shafter Head Start program gathers community support
Enthusiasm and dedication fuel the launch of Shafter's year round Head Start program led by Florence Owens with an instructional staff including Maria Torres Antonia Bentran Charlene Lopez and Migs. Forty of fifty four applicants were chosen with a waiting list for the 1970 71 term beginning in September. Parents urged to enroll at Boy Scout Hall for earlier registration and preferred placement. A side note shares 1790 city rankings from the U S Bureau of the Census listing New York Philadelphia Boston Charleston D C Baltimore Salem and Newport as leading cities of the era. Richland Elementary School schedules an open house to highlight Public Schools Week in the Richland District. The board of trustees decided the event during Monday's meeting and fixed the date for Thursday evening in April.

Man Held In Gun Death Of Joe Youngblood
A Shafter man is dead and his alleged slayer is held in Kern County jail on a homicide charge after a bizarre shooting south of Shafter Thursday evening. The victim is 45 year old Joe Youngblood of 30520 East Orange Street. The accused, Martin Farmer 40 of Clovis, is jailed in Bakersfield.

Head Start In Shafter Gets Off To A Strong Start
Shafter's Head Start program reports a successful inaugural week as 40 children ages 3 to 5 are placed in two age divisions. Mrs Florence Owens, previously from Jesno County, directs the program at Boy Scout Hall, Sunset and Walker, with Migs Torres and aides aiding. Classes run 8:30 to 12:45 Monday through Friday with lunches provided. A chain fence encloses the playground and mothers volunteer support continues. Needs include playground items games puzzles books shelving dresses and other arts materials.

Mercury Reach 85 Degrees in Shafter Week
Shafter recorded summery temperatures with a high of 85 on Saturday, April 4 and a cool 65 on Monday March 30. Overnight lows dipped to 33 on Tuesday March 31 and 45 on Sunday April 5. Soil temperatures ranged from 58 to 63 degrees between April 1 and April 4 per the U S Cottonvernon Station.

Voters decide four city offices in Shafter election
Shafter voters choose two city council seats, city treasurer and city clerk from nine candidates, including two women and three incumbents. Precincts merge from five to two, polling at City Hall and the social hall of a local organization. Absentee ballots are heavy with 2,005 registered voters.
