Shafter Christian Fellowship hosts a Celebration Carnival on April 19 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm with face painting worship Easter Egg Hunt Kids Club games and more. Easter Sunday worship is at 10:00 am with Children’s Church.
Scott Hurlbert succeeds John Guinn as City Manager of Shafter after joining the city in 2005 as IT Manager. He helped expand broadband and build a city network, aiming to attract business and improve life in the Central Valley. He is married to Beverly with a daughter, Emily, and pledges to run the city like a well run business.
Deputies from Wasco pursued Juan Alvarado after a traffic stop on a blue Chevrolet Impala. Alvarado and passenger Carlos Guadalupe Torres-Samano fled on foot, were chased through orchards and onto Highway 46, later captured near Palm Avenue School. Torres-Semano charged with resisting arrest. Alvarado charged with evading, narcotics offenses, paraphernalia, sales, license suspension, fleeing the scene, and two felony warrants. Both booked at Central Receiving Facility.
Mayra Alejandra Soria, 30, pleads guilty to conspiracy to steal and possess stolen mail and possession of 15 or more unauthorized access devices. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a 250000 dollar fine. Co-defendants earlier pled guilty. sentencing for Soria set for June 16.
Tigers Taekwondo of Wasco and Shafter dominated recent circuits with multiple state and national selections. Alex Solorio and Olivia Briah earned USA National team ranks in Colorado Springs. Oregon and Nevada champions earned Olympic Nationals bids. March Oxnard event saw nine gold and two bronze among first-time competitors. The program advances seventeen Tigers to national level competition.
The Shafter Head Start Program serves preschool children from low income families with education, health care, meals, and safe indoor and outdoor activities. Parents are engaged in development, and the first Father Son Daughter Dance fostered bonding and positive male role models as staff and families collaborated on decorations and activities.
