Soldier McCoy Leaves for Vietnam Duty
E/3 Daniel E. McCoy son of Mr and Mrs Max McCoy of 216 Voth Lane left April 1 for a tour of duty in Vietnam. He trained at Ft. Lewis and Ft. Benning then to Ft. Bragg with the Army Airborne division. McCoy, a 1967 Shafter High School graduate, also attended Richland Elementary. Family gathered for a weekend farewell with brothers Bill Melvin Mobley and sisters Marian Thompson and Jeannie Heathcoat present.

Shafter Youth Shot by Bakersfield Gunmen
Kenneth Wayne Scott a 19 year old Shafter college student was shot and killed early Saturday in Bakersfield. Investigators consider mistaken identity due to recent clashes between Bakersfield youth groups. Scott's companion Clark Long 19 is in critical condition at Kern General Hospital.

Lloyd Robertson Breaks Leg During Local Horse Ride
Lloyd Robertson of 29536 West Lerdo suffered a broken leg when his horse stumbled on a soft, rain softened ground during the Los Flojos horseback ride near Granite Station. A doctor attended quickly. Robertson’s foreman Roy Ryan overturned a pickup while seeking help but was not hurt. Robertson expected to walk again in eight to twelve weeks.
