358 Entries in Color Contest Brings Forth Colorful Young Artists
The Shafter Press Easter at the Zoo coloring contest drew over fifty entrants from stores including Rasco's Variety and Sprouse Reitz. Winners Randy Nations Linda Hensley and Sally Pearce received ten five and three dollar checks, with numerous honorable mentions awarded to young artists from ages seven to twelve.

11th Annual District 1 Art Festival in Wasco this Week
The Eleventh Annual District 1 Art Festival occurs this week in Wasco with prizes including first to honorable mention ribbons and two sweepstakes awards. Noted Artist Joe Gleason Dies at 77 in Glendale
Noted marine and portrait artist Joe Duncan Gleason died March 10 at Glendale Community Hospital. He was 77. Gleason visited Shafter in 1953 as a guest of the Shafter-Wasco Art Association and demonstrated oil painting. His sloop Dorothy was painted during that visit and presented to the association. He led the ultra conservative wing of Western art, chaired the Academy of Western Painters, and held posts with the Santa Monica Art Association and Artists of the Southwest. He also wrote on Quarantine history.

Taxpayers Benefited by Police Reserve Savings Report
The 10 member Shafter Police Reserve under Capt. Kerneth Anderson and Lt. Carl Kelly saved taxpayers 1971 dollars in 1958 through duty shifts. From Jan 1 to May 1 reservists logged 420 hours at no cost, worth 634.50 in wages, patrolling events and assisting at headquarters. From May 1 to Dec 31 they incurred 98 shifts, saving 1136.50. Mayor Grundy and Chief Witcher praise the reserve's role in maintaining law and order during training periods.

Public Pool Hours Announced For After School and Weekend
