Jackson county officials submitted a list of six candidates to Governor Gates for a county selective service board likely to be three members. The start of the nation’s second peace time draft was signaled by President Truman signing the two year selective service bill into law at 3 40 p.m. CST Thursday. It remains unclear if Jackson county will form its own board or be consolidated with nearby counties.

Watermelon Festival Planned In Brownstown
Brownstown Chamber of Commerce set plans for a fall watermelon festival in Brownstown during the first week of September. The event will feature a parade, watermelon queen, contests, free samples, a dance, and a softball double header at Brownstown Municipal Park. The meeting also announced near certainty of a garment factory locating in Brownstown with training to begin within 30 days and several hundred jobs anticipated.
