The 1948 harvest began as the first wheat was brought to local mills from Ed Bobb’s farm near Dudleytown and Marvin Hehman’s Seymour area. prices ranged around $2.16 to $2.17 per bushel for No 2 and No 1 quality grain amid a 97 degree day and continued hot humid weather with showers forecast.
Mrs Evelyn Hageman Brock aged 25 died Wednesday night at Bartholomew County Hospital Columbus after several months illness. Born February 10 1923 Sauers she lived in Jackson County. Survived by husband Charles E Brock daughter Ellen Marie parents Edwin J and Emma Brand Hageman brother Alger E Hageman Seymour R3 sister Velma Lee Hageman Seymour R3. Funeral 1:30 pm Saturday at home and 2 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev W A Mack. Burial Lutheran Cemetery. Funeral home Voss Mortuary says viewing after 7 pm tonight.
Mrs. Margaret Horstman the county health nurse will lead a summer round-up Saturday at 1 30 for children entering Washington school next fall. The event features a general physical check-up vision and hearing tests plus immunizations with Katie Wieder and Raymond Donnells in attendance. Parents are urged to bring their children.
Jackson county physicians urge residents to participate in a five day free chest X Ray drive run by the Jackson County Tuberculosis Association. Dr. Frank B. Bard cites early detection as key to treatment and eradication, with a mobile unit visiting Seymour, Freetown, and Medora on posted times.
Oscar William Holeman 67 of Brownstown died at his son Wilson Holeman’s home after a week of illness. Born January 28, 1881 in Thayer Iowa, he was a Brownstown Baptist Church member. Survived by wife Alma Wilson, two sons Wilson and Chester, brother Logan, all of Brownstown. Friends may call at Winklepleck Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Funeral arrangements pending.
Don Hall and Arthur Goecker, both of Seymour R3, were contracted as school bus drivers for Washington Township. Henry Hageman, township trustee, announced four bids. Hall bid $4 daily and Goecker bid $3.68.
Seymour downtown parking meters yielded $340.94 for the first full week of operation after enforcement began. The total since enforcement started climbs over $600, with a second weekly collection and a new coin counting cart introduced to handle the coins.

Federal courts across New York San Francisco and Cleveland issued anti strike orders on the eve of a strike ban expiration The orders invoke Taft Hartley provisions extending restraining relief for 80 days affecting about 70 000 CIO Maritime Union workers and two other CIO unions on the East and Gulf coasts
Jackson county and Seymour officials will join a traffic seminar in Paoli on June 30 as part of a state wide push to cut street and highway crashes. Col Robert Rossow state police superintendent urges vigorous action and joint enforcement and accident investigation. Seminar speakers include Dan Reynolds Purdue and James D Harrison Indiana Traffic Safety Commission director.
Jackson county Hamp shire breeder Clarence Wente reports his sow Pansy Version produced three litters in 10 months and one day, including a 16 pig litter on February 29 1948 weighing 60 pounds at birth. The sow’s first litter arrived April 28 1947 and the second October 2 1947.

Indianapolis report shows more infantile paralysis cases with Riley Hospital facing a nurse shortage. Dr. Donald J. Caseley warned staff would be hopelessly inadequate if an epidemic hits. August and September are typical epidemic months. nurses were sought from Red Cross and National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
The Navy opened an inquiry into a spectacular Detroit plane crash that killed two Naval reserve pilots Ensign J. H. Nicholson 25 of Scranton Iowa and Ensign Roy E. Schultheiss 24 of Port Huron Michigan after mid air collision in a seven plane formation. The crash caused fires in homes and a factory with thousands witnessing the disaster and police and firemen calling it a miracle no one else was killed or seriously injured. Capt. C. S. Cooper of the Grosse Ile Naval Air Station identified the victims.
Washington reports soft coal operators ready to sign a new contract with John L. Lewis. The proposal raises wages by about 12 percent and doubles the welfare pension fund royalty levy from 10 to 20 cents per ton, increasing annual pension funding to about 190 million dollars.
