Farmers push corn planting despite heat and sun baked ground with extended hours from dawn to midnight. County agent W P Stall notes no heat related sickness due to careful handling and many growers report working by moonlight to speed progress.
The body of the Rev. Father C. J. Conrad of St. Ambrose Catholic Church was moved to the church this afternoon and will lie in state until his funeral Friday at 9:30 am. Monsignor Hamill will celebrate and Father Sprigler will preach the sermon. Indiana priests will attend. burial is at the Catholic Cemetery.
Judge C. H. Montgomery of this city, a Hanover College board trustee, was appointed to the college’s standing committee of finance. The board met this week to fill vacancies, name standing committees, approve reports, and prepare for the September college year. Commencement exercises were held at the college Tuesday.
Seymour police help state and county investigators in a kidnapping and hijacking of a Ziffrin Trucking load on U S Route 31 north of Seymour. The driver Fred Pritchett of Indianapolis was taken to Shelbyville after the attack. 200 cases of cigarettes valued at about 2 000 dollars were stolen.
The Indiana State Highway Commission in Indianapolis announced second and fourth Wednesdays each month for conferences with road delegations from across the state. Conference hours run morning from 9 to 10 and afternoon from 2 to 3. Jackson county delegations have recently appeared regarding state and federal highways. disputed matters should be taken up with the district highway superintendent before the commission.
Mrs Claudia Jennings sixty four former house mother of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter at Franklin College died after a brief illness at the home of her daughter Mrs Charles B Staff in Franklin Indiana.
Sixty one students achieved a perfect attendance record at Shields High School for the 1932 33 year. In the first semester 153 students were not tardy or absent and 20 were tardy but not absent. in the second semester 102 were perfect with 9 tardy but not absent. Freshmen lead the year with 22 full attenders, followed by 19 Sophomores, 13 Juniors, and 7 Seniors.
Miss Helen Harlow aged twenty of Vincennes is recovering after a head on collision near Vincennes while returning from a picnic. Mrs Emma Wheeler aged sixty nine died, her son Glenn Wheeler was slightly hurt, and Ruby Mae McClure aged twenty one of Vincennes was injured.
About two to three thousand motorists in Jackson County have not yet obtained licenses from the local license branch. Margaret Burton, the license manager, says a state police check on licenses is likely soon. A fresh batch of chauffeurs licenses has arrived, with three-part forms now used for applications, state records, and branch files.
Jesse Cox a state highway commission employee from 322 East street was seriously hurt when the truck he drove left the road and rolled near Deputy. He was taken to Schneck Memorial Hospital with two severe head wounds including a gash above the neck and a gash along the right side cutting the ear. doctors say his condition is serious but stabilization is expected.
Sherida Ruth Blair aged 14, daughter of Mr and Mrs J R Blair, died shortly before noon at 217 North Lynn after a seven week battle with streptococcal infection. Born June 14 1918 in this city she would have turned 15 next Wednesday. A Freshman at the city high school she made high honor roll and was active in First Baptist Church Beta Gamma Kappa sorority High School B Y P A and church choir.
Mrs Anna Christine Blevins 59 died at 12 35 PM at 914 West Brown Street after more than two years of paralysis. Born August 28 1873 in Bartholomew County she married Ed Blevins September 22 1888 in Brownstown. Survived by husband two daughters Mrs Fay Hayes and Mrs J R Brooks two sons James and Orville Blevins a brother Jesse Mackey and two sisters Mrs James Green and Mrs John Cheen five grandchildren. Funeral 9 30 AM Saturday at Voss Mortuary with Rev Albert Schmitt. Burial Riverview Cemetery.
The Franklin College Extension Division reports daily inquiries about placing a year of college work in four Indiana towns including this city. Non freshman students may enroll for credit in introductory courses such as literature sociology and economics, aiding progression toward a degree.
Joe McCleary a twenty four year old Salem youth who had been missing for two weeks has returned home. He told Salem Sergeant John Weir that two men in Louisville forced him to drive his coupe to Salem then to Chicago where they released him after taking his money. He fled back to Salem by hitchhiking. He said the abandoned car found near the standpipe contained his clothing and billfold. Authorities had pursued many theories about his disappearance.
Arthur Lange of this city won the Indiana Walther League oratorical contest in Fort Wayne on May 21 and will travel to Chicago on July 16 to contest for the national title. He will address the theme We Must Go Forward, the same subject used to win district and state honors. Lange is the son of Mr and Mrs H F Lange and a member of the Walther League at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The national event coincides with the national Walther League convention in Chicago.
Mrs. Franklin D Roosevelt said her son Elliott plans to reside in Nevada to allow his wife to seek a divorce on grounds of incompatibility. Elliott Roosevelt and Elizabeth Donner wed January 16, 1932.
Berlin reports a general moratorium on pre July 1931 German credits. Transfers will favor post July 31 1931 credits. Officials say no debt moratorium, but Schacht seeks authority to delay amortization, lower interest rates, and defer installments.
Elmer Smith, owner of the Log Cabin filling station on U S Road 31 near Columbus, faces liquor charges after a raid found 72 pints and several quarts of home brew beer, wine, and whiskey. He pled guilty to possession for sale, paying a $10 fine and costs. Earlier, federal officers seized 20 gallons of whiskey from his car and he was released on a $2,000 bond.
The Christian Men Builders Class of Third Christian Church in Indianapolis dedicates its service for Seymour Day on the next Sunday. The 9:30 to 10:30 a m radio broadcast on WEBM aims to bring devotions to shut ins and deliver a message for Seymour residents. Merle Sidener leads the class with twenty years’ service as membership reaches about one thousand with 821 present last Sunday and average attendance at 925 this year.
Heat from recent days expands concrete causing several blow ups. State highway crews monitor pavement sections in the district. A section about a foot wide on West Walnut Street Brownstown crumpled in front of a new house built by C Robertson. The force reportedly shook nearby houses. A two foot wide strip across State Road 35 about a mile west of Brownstown also crumbled.
City officials await final word as negotiations continue for the annual state air tour to visit Seymour likely on Tuesday June 20 if plans are finalized. Bob Curry of White River Airport says 40 to 50 planes may attend and Army ships could perform stunts at each stop.
The Senate unanimously extended the authority of its probe committee examining J. P. Morgan and Co to scrutinize stock transactions used by the firm’s partners to cut income taxes. C. P. Van Sweringen testified that a special corporation device in some railroad operations once removed liability on 15 million dollars.
Madrid reports the government led by Premier Manuel Azana submitted its resignation today after mounting political turmoil. Officials indicated the move would trigger a transition period as parties negotiate a new administration.
Round the world flyer Jimmie Mattern, flying from Omsk toward Krasnoyarsk, was forced to land at Belovo after a fuel line leak filled the cockpit with fumes. He said he was exhausted and ill but planned temporary repairs to continue, aiming for Krasnoyarsk for stabilizer fixes.
