Utes outmaneuvered cavalry units believed distant and seized a supply train. Indian scouts and tactical surprise disrupted the column, forcing retreat and delaying expeditionary movements in the region. Authorities vow to pursue retaliatory measures.
Cable reports from Sheridan Wyoming and New York describe Secretary Root denouncing Hearst as unfit for governor. Roosevelt’s remarks link Hearst to demagoguery fueling crime and discontent while independents finance Hearst’s campaign. Alaska seeks territorial government and Alaska Central Railway orders boost timber and bridge work for upcoming completion.
Sheridan Wyoming October 31 Eight hundred Cheyenne warriors march south to join Utes along Tongue River in Montana as Ute forces reconnoiter hills. Sixth and Tenth Cavalry rush to the scene with Col Auger diverting units from Cheyenne toward Ashland to join Fort Keogh troops. Ute discontent over allotment spurred move from Utah reserves into Wyoming and Montana.
Joseph A. Bourke, mining figure from Valdez and co owner of the Prospector, says activity in Prince William Sound copper mining continues to grow. Development is under way on islands and the eastern mainland. Latouche Island hosts large deposits. The Standard Copper mine on Landlock Bay will ship within 30 days. Bourke foresees a future smelter and notes fuel will influence its location. He recently bought Dr. Cook's launch for Sound transfer. Prof Georgeson lists 1905 Alaska homestead totals by region, with Valdez and Seward among the top counts.
Washington reports Roosevelt declining to repudiate pamphlet statements shared with Woodruff of the New York Republican committee. Secretary Root planned to speak in Utica presenting administration views on the New York campaign issues. Albany notes state court of appeals ruling that independent candidates named by petition must appear on ballots, seen as a Hearst victory.
The Saratoga reports sufficient freight at Seldovia when she called last Saturday to load the Tyonic for two trips after a prior voyage. The inlet was ice free, but it remained uncertain if the Tyonic would attempt another trip.
In New York on November 1, Hughes leads upstate by an estimated 200 000 votes per William Barnes former Republican state committee chair. The Independence League says Hearst will be elected while P H McCarren cites a Croker cable commending his stand. McCarren battles the Independence League over the Kings County judicial ticket and seeks Hearst support for the full Democratic ticket.
Conservative and Bryan democracy factions plan nationwide organizing against Hearst and his bid for the presidency. They acknowledge Hearst controls the state machine and will be a factor in 1908, governor or not. The slogan calls to Beat and bury Hearst.
Democratic state committee says poll watchers will challenge all Mormon voters under the state constitution at the coming election. They aim to contest the senator's seat if Republicans win the legislature, and seek annulment of Mormon franchise. Also notes unusually large cabbages, 27 pounds by Levi Morris and 33 pounds by a Wrangell resident Cook.
President Roosevelt authorized the Philippine commission to call a general election for March 27, 1907, to elect delegates to the first Filipino legislative assembly. Voters must be 23 or older and literate in Spanish or English. The assembly will legislate for all tribes except Moros and non Christians, who remain under direct supervision of the Philippine commission.
Al Kaufman was declared heavyweight champion after Berger quit in the tenth round as Berger’s seconds threw in the sponge. Berger had his moments in the third round with two knockdowns, but Kaufman dominated the bout in San Francisco with plans to meet Philadelphia Jack O'Brien next.
Findlay Ohio October 30 Judge Banker fined Standard Oil Company 35000 and costs in a conspiracy in restraint of trade conviction. The fine and costs total about 20000 and would amount to 6000000 if repeated daily for a year.
Steamer Corwin arrived from Nome Thursday morning and sailed in the evening for Seattle by way of Juneau and the inside passage. She carried a small number of passengers and left Nome October 18.
Mrs. Wilson Mizner ordered her husband from their home and filed for divorce citing his money demands and neglect. The pair had sparked society headlines after Mizner, once a Dawson and Nome resident, married the late Charles T. Yerkes widow, a union that drew wide attention before fading from page one. In Nome reports, the schooner Martha W Lufts arrived at Dutch Harbor leaking with lumber and oil bound for Bartels Tin Mining, forcing jettison of deck cargo to return to Seattle. Captain West of the Corwin forwarded the updates.
The Steamer Saratoga arrived from the westward Tuesday at 1 p m and departed for Seattle at 1 p m with 9000 cases of salmon from Uyak. A F Davidson cannery superintendent and Mrs Davidson were among the outgoing passengers. The article notes Thibet allows a woman three husbands and praises Rio Janeiro harbor.
Atlantic City N J Oct 29 three electric cars crowded with passengers on the West Jersey road jumped to bridge while crossing to the mainland and dropped into the ocean. Twenty five bodies recovered and at least fifty more drowned. Boats saved fifty and a few men swam out. The beach was lined with spectators as many women fainted. Most victims were trapped in cars and drowned before escape. cries of the imprisoned were terrible to hear. Nearly all could have been saved by boats if they had escaped the cars.
Special Agent Parks reported that hundreds crossed the Indian police at the Walker Lake Reservation and moved onto lands slated to open at noon. He urged postponing the opening for thirty days to clear and yard the area and reduce danger to settlers and officials.
