The steamer Saratoga ran aground at E Ham ar while departing Valdez for Seattle. Passengers from Valdez to Seattle were moved to the steamer Elsie and returned to Valdez as concerns rose she might break apart when the tide fell.
A bandit posing as a U S postal inspector boarded the Oriental Limited and rifled the mail for four hours before escaping with a heavy loot. Bloodhounds pursued but lost the scent. no further clues found. Belief is that only a few hundred dollars were taken.
