Coal Miners Strike Looms Across Eastern States
Eastern coal fields brace for a planned strike set to begin April 1. About 28,000 miners are expected to halt work as the United Mine Workers press for wage hikes, youth labor limits, union wage scales for outside laborers, a seven cent differential for pick versus machine mining, and a straight cane mine basis across states. A relief fund backs the effort, with aid from nonstruck states.
