Senator Samuel H. Piles Delegate Thomas Cale and S A McKenzie urged President access to Alaska coal beds during a Washington meeting. They stressed the value of immediate opening and referred the matter to Commissioner Ballinger for action.

The Fearless sank at her moorings on January 20 while docked at the Dora shipyard in Uaska. The vessel, owned by the A Commercial Company of San Francisco, listed and went under after heavy snow accumulated on the sail and deck. Captain stated the steamer was not properly looked after.
The schooner Gem went ashore at Ikatak and is reported a total wreck. A wrecking outfit from Francisco was sent, but the vessel is completely broken up. The Dawson-based McClusky brothers sent Yukon grown oats east, noting five-season trials and promising hardier yields with upland tilling. Hay has also been raised successfully in the region.
Walter Koen announces a jade ledge over six feet wide on the Black River tributary of the Kobuk. He staked thirty six 160 acre locations and shipped 600 pounds of stone to Tiffanys in New York. Specimens examined by Dahl, a jeweler, are of unusually fine quality and compare to top jade from Kara Kash valley in Eastern Turkestan. Alaska grows as a site for mining and railroad expansion, with quartz potential and broader investor interest.
Secretary of War William H. Taft spoke at a Grand Rapids banquet, greeted by a large audience of prominent Republicans. He voiced strong support for a larger navy and declared the United States holds first place among world powers.
Washington Feb 10 The American battle fleet commanded by Admiral Evans has left Punta Arenas on the straits of Magellan and will not be in touch with land again before next Friday.
Early today a furnace explosion in a Pittsburg steel plant caused instant death for many workers and serious injuries to scores more. Fire crews battled flames as paramedics treated the injured at the scene and nearby hospitals. The blast sent debris over surrounding streets. Investigators will determine the cause.
