Steamer Portland Wrecked on Rocks Near Spire Island

The steamer Portland ran aground on Spire Island eight miles below Ketchikan and was a total loss. All passengers were saved, with the Santa Clara taking them to Seattle. The ship, an old vessel with a noted history, had sailed from Seward December 11 amid rough seas and earlier weather-related mishaps. The buoy drift and heavy weather near Resurrection Bay contributed to the disaster, with reports tracing the mishap to an out-of-position Spire island buoy observed by the Bertha report.
