Steamer Portland Wrecked on Spire Island Reef
The Steamer Portland ran ashore on Spire Island eight miles below Ketchikan and was a total loss. All passengers and freight were saved, and the Santa Clara moved them to Seattle. The loss prompted checks on buoy positions and reports from Bertha and Oregon steamers. Captain Lindquist and crew are noted in past rescue records. The vessel’s troubled voyage began with heavy seas and a fierce storm near Resurrection Bay, before breaking up off Spire Island due to a drifting buoy.
