Ship Wrecked in Bering Sea After Fog Fatalities Reported
A vessel named John Currier en route from Nushagak to Astoria grounded at Nelson’s Lagoon in the Bering Sea on August 9 at 1:30 am. Dense fog and head winds caused the wreck. The 1857 ton ship carried thirty thousand cases of salmon with 280 passengers, including 150 Japanese and Chinese and 130 whites, plus cannery workers. All aboard reached shore and are camped awaiting aid. The ship and cargo are a total loss. cargo insured, ship not. The owners are California Shipping Co of San Francisco.

On Hook bay the east shore of the Alaska peninsula a ten foot wide semi-anthracite coal vein has been found by W S Warner after four years of intermittent work. It was noted while investigating the copper deposit mentioned in yesterday's Gateway. Also reported: seventeen thousand dollars in gold stolen from the steamer Seattle No 3 on the Yukon river, with dust shipped by registered mail and no clue yet. Nome council approves an ordinance requiring all city dogs to be muzzled or chained due to hot weather and safety concerns.

Coal Mine at Port Graham Opens With Steam Hoist and Pump

Sand Point Gold Property Bonds Reported in Alaska
Oscar Olsen and D F Cook owners of Sand Point gold quartz claims bonded to Seattle represented parties led by J L McPherson. The lodge linked to a mine at Unga once producing over three million dollars in gold for Alaska Commercial. McPherson and Olsen arrived aboard the Dora.
