The Alaska Coast Company chartered the steamer Ohio from Frank Waterhouse for eight months. The steamer will be freed on the Seward route. Waterhouse will soon become Seattle agent for the Alaska Coast Company.
A colliery disaster near Kokoku traps 400 miners as wrecked walls threaten many deaths. Reports place the danger as grave with rescuers awaiting word and the men’s fate undetermined. The piece also notes mining and whaling developments in Alaska and Nome areas.

Bridgeport Conn August 12 Four crewmen of an ocean schooner were drowned when the steamer Tennessee collided off the coast. The captain survived as the schooner sank. Prof Crosby of MIT and mineralogist for Reynolds Alaska Development Co traveled to Seward aboard the Santa Clara to exam copper properties. He is joined by W Larson a property investor. Crosby plans to survey additional copper properties in the region after leaving port. Recent strikes at Goldstream O Connor Esther Big Eldorado and Cleary creeks in the Fairbanks district have drawn hundreds of prospectors to the fields.

Italian fighter Carbona from Katalla was found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon against Jailer Olsen of Valdil. Capt. O'Brien of the steamer Yucatan testified. He may face further charges for assaults on two other Italians. A prior insanity trial concluded Carbona sane.
The widow of the late Stanford White, victim of Harry Thaw, will marry his partner Charles Mc Kim, according to New York reports dated August 12.
A party including Prof. Crosby Pitman Gould Elsworth Barnewell and E ee left on the launch Bina for Sunny Bay to inspect the Clayson Pitman Gould copper claims for potential purchase by the Reynolds-Alaska Development Company Crosby is the company mineralogist and geologist.
