An inmate from Bremer county who received a twenty year sentence for the murder of Jerome Kern was released on parole after about seven years served. The case drew wide attention in Bremer and Black Hawk counties and remains a notable event in local crime history.
Clarksville reports brewing interests plan a petition after the next election to push open saloon efforts. Rumor ties 300 from a Waverly brewery to the fund as factions mobilize for or against the liquor drive, with heavy turnout expected and nonvoters excluded.
Ackley October 21 W F Jacob sold his stake in the drug store to S D Bruening and the new firm will be Junkerman & Co The deal closed and possession was given Wednesday Jacob also sold his dray and bus line to Ot ty Grobe and Herman Barger who assume control and will oversee the business The former owner will travel to the world’s fair and has not announced his future occupation
Webster City October 21 The Jacob Funk estate is sued for 1000 to cover stock holdings in the Germania bank that failed recently. Under state banking laws a stockholder owes an assessment equal to the value of holdings. Winding up authorities have levied the full amount on each stockholder to reimburse depositors.
Dubuque reports strong authority that the Staples divorce dispute will be settled. Dr Staples reportedly offered $10000 to his wife to withdraw her cross petition and permit a divorce. She seeks separate maintenance while he wants an absolute divorce. the cross petition remains with her lawyers and a trial remains unlikely for now.
Mason City October 31 The Bank of Meservey has closed and assigned its assets to Lt. Phillips for creditors. Private property of J E Hill and Barney, operators, also assigned. Total assets 24400 debts 67950, creditors expected to recover all funds.
Rev H C Pratt visiting Cedar Rapids recently suffered a light stroke with facial paralysis on the right side. He has convalesced enough to walk daily and his physician says he can resume duties at his new pastorate within two weeks. A Manchester report claiming a complete stroke was unfounded.
In New Hartford on Oct 21 a meeting of business men and farmers held at Houlihans hall discussed consolidating creameries to establish a large local operation. The Palmer Hubbard creamery in Waterloo draws much patronage, forcing smaller creameries to fail. Farmers and local businessmen plan to back a new creamery to replace failing nearby facilities.
John E. Hoff a longtime Waterloo dry goods merchant and civic leader was severely injured in an automobile accident near Los Angeles. He suffered a broken leg and other minor injuries. details are scarce. Mrs Hoff and daughter Anna are with him in Los Angeles where they planned to spend the winter.
A Des Moines observer contrasts English and American conditions, citing English poverty and almshouses as a result of free trade. He notes workers endure low wages, irregular employment, and meager living, while American wages and protections differ. The account links prosperity to tariff policy and predicts ongoing mill closures in Britain without protection.

Cedar Rapids Oct 21 Judge Rothrock and Judge Reed have opened the doors of the district federal and superior courts for trial of damage cases stemming from the Quinlon hotel fire over two years ago. Petitions were filed in all three courts. motions to strike centered on fire escape law. District court Judge Preston had thrown out one motion, but Rothrock and Reed overruled similar motions, allowing merits trials. Next week a federal case goes to trial and remaining district cases move to the superior court.
Frank Spohr, 17, was killed near Waverly when a switching freight train amputated both legs as he stepped between train sections. He died at 10 pm after four hours of agony. The Illinois Central No. 491 freight crew from Waterloo, led by Engineer Snyder and Conductor Pat Sullyan, faced a sudden, fatal accident witnessed by passengers.
Jamen Murray of Unity rents his farm to W. H. Mapon of Toledo for five years at 4 dollars an acre. Murray plans to move to Tarkio Missouri to educate his children. A Reinbeck Standard note mentions extensive corn crib spoiling risk and warns against cribting for at least two weeks. Potatoes yield reports include John Frenzen 215 bushels per acre, James Hildebrand over 600 bushels from two and a half acres, Aud Miller three bushels from four potatoes. Potatoes bring 22 to 25 cents per bushel, making them profitable despite low prices.
Des Moines report on the Iowa Supreme Court ruling in Dowling & Allgood vs Wilbur Wood. The court holds a married man's wage exemption can be waived if he agrees to garnishment, and that such consent may remove the exemption defense. The decision discusses motives and cites related cases and local notices.
Jesup Iowa telegram reports the death of Mrs. G. F. Harris formerly Corda Underwood of Jesup. She died in Spokane Tuesday and was buried there Wednesday. Her husband, W. Harris, once superintendent of the Waterloo Water Company, survives her along with a large circle of acquaintances in Jesup.
H E Aurlbird deputy sheriff of Casenovia New York arrested W W Bassett in Sioux City for having three wives. One wife resided in Casenovia another in Booneville New York and a third in Hornich Iowa. Abridg e of a month. The second wife was out on bail for an earlier arrest by the first and now both are against him.
Osage Press reports a prize pickerel weighing 24 pounds and measuring 3 feet inches found near the bridge below the flown. Frank Hoyton landed the fish after a struggle as several anglers failed to reel it in. Mr Boylan aided by entering the water to capture the prize.
Waterloo Waverly and other delegations joined Cedar Falls on Oct 1 for Blackhawk lodge fifty year anniversary. Masonic leader S A Bishop of Cedar Falls became the county's first Mason from Blackhawk. Toasts honored Ancient Masonry and Easter Star with remarks by Hemenway Merner Snowden and Loveland.
The open season for game fish in Iowa rivers runs May 15 to Nov 15, with fishing banned after November 15. Only soft fish like suckers may be caught during the closed period. Deputy Warden H Yordy will enforce the ban, and Waterloo fishermen will have to wait indoors.
John Oliver describes a dramatic illness with yellow skin sunken eyes and pain. After three physicians gave up he credits a bottle of Fledric Bittera for his marked improvement within three weeks and warns others against similar fate. Grundy Center Oct 21 The Slifer murder trial ending in acquittal draws countywide censure of County Attorney F W Reisinger as unjust. Judge A Blair sent a Waterloo district letter noting Reisinger acted properly in intercepting and presenting evidence, warning against undue blame and urging restraint.
The dispute centers on a $3,500 estimate for William Slifer’s trial costs. Auditor C E Thomas claims he would guarantee if offered $4,000, while maintaining the county costs should not exceed $3,500. Slifer returns from the world’s fair and prepares to enter the photograph business after buying Charles Frost’s gallery.
A Leesville resident, W H Brown, near death from consumption, was saved by D Kings New Discovery for consumption. He credits it with ending torment from asthma, then curing consumption, pneumonia, bronchitis and grip. It is touted as a peerless remedy for lung troubles, priced 50c and 1.00, with free trial doses offered by Wangler Bros Todd, druggists.
