General Stoessel’s official report dated Sept 23 confirms a severe battle at Port Arthur from Sept 19 to 22. Mines exploded causing heavy losses. Japanese casualties estimated at twenty thousand over four days. Russian forces repulsed the attack as the conflict intensified near Mukden and other fronts.
Charles F. Kelly, ex speaker of the house of delegates, files a written confession detailing the boodle ring. He claims a prominent local politician promised pardons and support if the faction stayed united and that he received a boodle fund of 47500 dollars divided among nineteen members. Kelly accuses financiers of St Louis of backing the combine to thwart William Folk’s anti corruption drive, and says most municipal assembly bills paid for by the group.
Funeral services for the late Senator Hoar were held in Worcester at Unity Church. The service was simple and well attended, with Rev. Edward Everett Hale leading prayers at the house before the procession. The casket lay in state at City Hall and will be taken to Concord for burial tomorrow.

In Parkersburg on Sunday Mrs. Sheldon Foote wife of S A Foote a leading merchant, was found dead at about 1:00 pm in an upstairs room. She hanged herself using a rope attached to a ceiling hook after placing a step ladder nearby. An inquest found death by own action from melancholia. Funeral plans are pending.
The district court will formally open tomorrow at 10 oclock with Judge A S Blair presiding. Jurymen summoned for last term will report. the morning is expected to be spent securing a jury. The State v L G Willing, a Waterloo merchant indicted on several counts, is among the cases.
The defense has spent months preparing to clear Willing as he remains jailed for several months. Willing may appear with a heavy beard obscuring his features after a barber visit. Jesup, October 3 Special to Reporter George Westfall escaped death when Local freight No.94 struck his wagon at 1:45 am near the Wapsie Creek. Two horses were killed and Westfall injured with two broken ribs and a scalp wound. The accident damaged a valuable team and occurred as the engine was returning for a remaining portion of the train.
E D Calkins, formerly stenographer to General Foreman Nash at Illinois Central, is chosen as Waterloo branch general manager for Becker firm. He resigns from Illinois Central and will start new duties within a week. Russell L DeGon to fill vacancy temporarily. Aden Arabia reports Somali Mullah attacked and robbed the Oudain tribe, killing six hundred tribesmen.
Sam Gushard faced Judge Martin in police court after an assault on Officer Mickey Mickley on West Fourth Street Saturday. Gushard paid 53.85 dollars for the incident, admitting a nervous temper and lack of provocation, while Mickley recuperates for several days and police vow to make an example of similar conduct.
A new coal and fuel yard is planned in Waterloo pending a suitable location. H C Becker of Becker Bros coal dealers Dubuque is in town arranging an office and seeking East Fourth Street space. The firm, with long Dubuque operations, will keep interests there and open Waterloo as a branch with HL C Hecker leading the local yard setup within days.
East Waterloo Board of Education accepted C O Balliett’s resignation and elected H B Cropper as a director. Balliett, longtime school affairs participant, steps down due to failing health. Cropper praised as a worthy successor by the unanimous board at the Saturday meeting.
Grace church youth groups surprised Pastor Rev Bissell with a gathering on Saturday evening. Mrs Bissell provided refreshments and a chafing dish as a token of appreciation for the couple's faithful service and character. Captain Cotton voiced the collective admiration for the pastor's ministry.
