Epidemic confusion over chickenpox and smallpox tale
A Waterloo Reporter item about John Sims of 1525 Mast Fourth Street claiming a 40 year old case of chickenpox sparks reader memories of a 1904 Butler County outbreak. The letter notes adults and children confusing the diseases and recalls James Shorter, who never had chickenpox yet showed chickenpox symptoms late in life, while a former soldier treated smallpox patients, highlighting old debates on immunity and diagnosis. The piece also touches on political talk and partisan rhetoric surrounding public notices.

Water Company Opposed to Rail Tracks On River Front
G R Henderson of the water company explains that Illinois Central cannot gain permission to occupy river front grounds with side tracks. The company owns lands facing the river with a pumping station and reservoir between, and laying tracks around the reservoir would risk collapse. While rail traffic needs more storage, the matter must be deferred for now due to danger to the reservoir and system.
