Civil Service Report Shows 937000 Executives in US Service

The twenty fourth annual report of the United States Civil Service Commission lists about 937,000 officers and employees in the executive civil service as of June 30, 1907, with 196,918 subject to examination. It notes more eligibles than appointments, a shortage for higher grades, and insufficient incentive for top candidates. The commission reports two convictions for political assessments and removals for pernicious political activity. Also noted is a Weather Bureau seismograph record of a slight distant-origin earthquake on February 1 at 6:16:11 p m, 78th meridian time.

Wabash Train Wreck Kills Two Near Britton Station

A Wabash eastbound passenger train wrecked two miles west of Britton at about midnight killing two women passengers and injuring thirty four others. The dead include Mrs. Francis Vargo of Budapest and a man identified as John Smith of Milwaukee. Most injuries are bruises and sprains.

Captain Robert P. Speer of Cedar Falls dies at home after a long illness. Born February 25, 1828, he served as captain in the Union Army from 1862 to 1864 and later became a renowned farmer and agriculturalist in Iowa. He held multiple public roles including trustee at Iowa State Agricultural College, head of Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station at Ames, and leader in various agricultural societies. His death closes a life of public service, science, and community leadership.

New Iowa Life Insurance Company Formed in Waterloo

A new Iowa Life Insurance company was organized in Waterloo with capital of 100000 and surplus of 25000 all paid in. F A Ferguson of Des Moines will be secretary and general manager. Directors include C W Mullan and G B McWilliams among others from Waterloo Cedar Falls Des Moines Waverly and Cedar Falls. Office to be kept in Cedar Falls with branches statewide. The firm plans to operate in Iowa this year then expand next year to neighboring states. The formation marks major local banking and insurance interest uniting prominent Waterloo capitalists. Reports highlight potential boosts to Waterloo’s finances and city growth through policy payments deposited locally.

Brookes Youth Receives Indeterminate Sentence For Rape

James Brooke, 17, pled guilty to raping a fourteen year old girl near the rural county precinct.
