The Iowa Supreme Court affirmed the soldiers preference act, ruling appointive public offices should favor Civil War veterans when qualifications are equal. The decision, reversing Judge Caswell, would affect city, county, and state offices. attorney Lyon vowed to seek salary for Capt. Shaw from the city upon rejection of his appointment.
Pearl Johnson visited from Union to see his parents while Lulu Johnson stayed with her sister Mrs John Hutson in Union. W H Bowers of Eldora works on the Hayden house this week as do Rick and wife from Owasa visiting Dyke. Rev Caulson of Marshalltown assisted Rev Ballz in services. Carl Townsend and Albert Vandike went to Franklin County on business. J F Johnson and wife returned from Minnesota. Vess Moon of New Providence visited his sister Mrs H F Johnson. One twin of Mr and Mrs Robert Reed died from whooping cough and was buried Wednesday.
W Faris and family visited N C. Penelope Laughlin was buried at Honey Creek on Wednesday. Farmers in the district finished picking corn Tuesday. Will and Elias Perisho attended the funeral of their niece Fannie Plummer at GeGrande. New Providence academy opened with about ninety pupils. Miss Bessie Perisho of Grant Center stays with her aunt and attends New Providence school. The mornings bring the sound of corn thumping against wagons.
Foster visits relatives in Steamboat Rock. Dorman Arnold and wife attend Ridge gathering. Louise Putnam of Ivester visits the Ridge. Gearhart travels to Arapaho Nebraska on business. Funnie Vigars visits Eldora schools. Residents from the Ridge attend the Johnson sale at Gifford. Jenet Barnard visits her niece Mrs Joe Newell in Grandy County. R L Underwood of Alexandria SD visits Jennie Whitney. Jennie Whitney returns from Greene County visit with Mae Thomas.
Mrs Lee Jones is very ill. W A Wickham and family visited friends in Owasa Sunday. Mr and Mrs Otis Windecker spent Sunday with Ed Cross. Mrs Harp and Mrs Miller of Jows Falls visited in the city Saturday. Mr and Mrs J S Quiggle visited Lucy Syverson in Eldora Wednesday. Wm Mogle from near Ackley and Mrs Swartwood visited Geo Wilson last Sunday. John Windecker and P McVey attended a Masonic meeting in Ackley Monday night. Mont Leach and wife and Mrs Swartwood visited J S Quiggle Thursday. Christian Aid Society will serve a Thanksgiving supper in the hall on Nov 30. Everybody invited. farmers traveling to Eldora this week are urged to attend.
