A heavy rain and wind storm swept through the area from 9 30 p m to midnight Wednesday night causing damage. Roads were slick and structures reported minor harm with widespread power disturbances and downed branches. Emergency crews responded to several calls for debris and isolated outages.
A destructive Wednesday night rain and wind storm caused widespread damage in Eldora. The Opera House block suffered a blown front plate glass window with white goods display ruined, likely costing near five hundred dollars, plus flooding in Larson Hardware and Starr Drug cellars. Barns and outbuildings on Felton and Sheldon farms were wrecked, windmills toppled, and property losses extended beyond Eldora to nearby counties.
A Wednesday night storm unleashed severe damage in multiple areas with cattle killed in pastures. The event disrupted towns, caused power outages, and prompted emergency crews to respond to widespread incidents. Local officials assess the toll and coordinate relief efforts.
Guardian J. L. Farrington announced the B. B. Bliss estate will be sold under district court direction to satisfy claims. The list includes much city real estate in Hiverdide Park and Manufacturer's additions, plus a Hubbard hotel and a brick block in Eagle Grove. Properties will go to the highest bidder.
In Iowa Falls on May 11 a marriage joined E J Wood and Cora D Holmes two well known local residents. Rev H O Pratt of the First Methodist church performed the ceremony. The couple plan a eastern honeymoon visiting Chicago New York City Boston Philadelphia and Washington and will be at home after June 1. Mr Wood is a prominent businessman with past roles in lumber and as B C R N agent at Dows and Buffalo Center now in the ice business locally.
County Superintendent Mrs. Ella B. Chassell schedules arithmetic and spelling contest in Iowa Falls during the Baptist Sabbath School Assembly of Iowa chautauqua. Educational day will be July 28. Township contests will select up to eight pupils per township to compete. Open to all pupils through eighth grade and below. Cash prizes totaling $24. awards range from $1 to $3.
President E. S. Ellsworth and Vice President William Welden of Des Moines Falls & Northern returned from a survey trip to northern Iowa. They will study three proposed routes for extensions northeast from Town Falls, seeking the most desirable line. No statements were issued, and no definite decisions were announced. Dr. G. A. Stewart, dentist, at Wartchow's market.
Miss Genevieve Hardin entertained many young people at a tea party Tuesday evening in honor of Miss Stevenson. Mrs. C. J. Warthow hosted the 50 ng matron's Embroidery Club at her home last Thursday in honor of Mrs. Lagerquist. Each lady brought a small gift for Mrs. Lagerquist and a pleasant social time followed. Wills' furniture store advertises sewing machines and supplies including the old re Hable Domestic model.
A persuasive plea from The Herald to Eldora business men to boost local sales by advertising in its Twice a Week edition. It argues against catalogue houses, urges price quoting, and invites merchants to compare prices to lure buyers home. The piece emphasizes mutual benefit for dealers and the newspaper.
Market day sale scheduled for May 1 in New Providence with buyer from Chicago J G Nelly to purchase horses and draft stock. Numerous buyers expected. sellers urged to bring horses cattle sheep hogs buggies household goods and other property for a fair sale with usual commission. The Christian church ladies host a church fair at the YMCA building with useful items for sale. This Saturday at 11 30 a chicken pie dinner and tonight at 5 30 a supper will be served. The Poole orchestra provides music in the afternoon and evening. Patronize the fair and enjoy a square meal.
