A commemorative speech urges loyalty and unity among Black Americans, recalling Dred Scott, emancipation, and the path from oppression to education. The speaker defends voting integrity, condemns buying votes with whiskey or money, and urges Negro voters to choose candidates by merit and platform, not bribery.
The Central Missouri Conference reports on church work at Work on the West and the parsonage debt, with Rev. M. J. Jackson and Rev. W. A. Lofannon noted for leadership. Quarterly meetings July 30 31 and August 4 outline successful service, revival spirit, and active membership across centers Holden circuit and neighboring churches. Attendees include Rev. Patton, W. J. Smith, P. J., and Mrs Mollie Gooch with mention of local families and out-of-town visitors.
The Fourth of August celebration drew about two thousand attendees with a large, orderly crowd of colored residents noted as the best in sixteen years. Reports from the Daily Press and Democrat praise the event, though some invited speakers could not attend due to illness or timing. The Sedalia Times notes attendance below past summers but calls the program financially successful, with Prof. Page delivering a noted speech and various bands providing music at Liberty Park.
Professor H L Billups announces his promotion to head a Wiley University professorship after years serving Freedmen's Aid and Southern Mission work. He recalls Sedalia welcome starting January 13 1804 and the college opening January 18 1804, praising community support, and expresses gratitude as he joins Wiley University Texas.
