Methodist South Conference Holds Busy Jefferson City Session

The South Methodist conference met in Jefferson City on Saturday. Sedalia was chosen as next meeting site without opposition. The statistical report listed 102 local preachers and 31,241 members, 129 Epworth Leagues with 4,172 members, 281 Sunday schools with 2,518 officers and teachers and 21,292 pupils. Income totaled 9,115.30 for presiding elders, 66,639.25 for pastors, and 1,072.22 for bishops. The conference owns 338 churches valued at 726,250. Board of Education names included A. H. Barnes, A. B. Appleby, W. C. Scarritt, F. Groves, J. W. Howell, BE. Leonard, J. J. Pritchett, B. Rodes, Joseph King, L. A. Swaney, J. W. Koontz, D. P. Williams, J. B. Ellis, and T. W. Cunningham.

Molasses Vat Tragedy Kills Teen Near Pilot Grove

Chas Mullette, 15, son of farmer Joseph Mullette near Pilot Grove, Mo, fell into a scalding molasses vat this morning. His face hands and chest were severely burned and flesh peeled from his hands, but he remained alive.

Miles Sent to Philippines Amid Encampment Controversy

Grand Army circles claim Gen. Miles was ordered to leave September 15 to avoid an unwelcome reception during the encampment, a move officials say aimed to prevent distraction from the secretary of war and President Roosevelt. Miles lamented missing the event while noting the order came against his wishes.

St Louis Delegates Nominate Gallenkamp For President

At the afternoon session the convention heard committee reports and Dele gate Smith of St Louis nominated Hon Chas F Gallenkamp for president by acclamation. John Albus of St Joseph was nominated for first vice president by acclamation. R C Day of St Louis was named for second vice president.

Grain broker A Raum forced to close after market surge

A Raum, a Sedalia area grain and stock broker, closed his 111 East 3rd Street office due to mounting losses from a wheat and corn surge. The firm faced over 400000 bushels short at Hustonia and Cole Camp points, with losses exceeding 15000 by day end and liabilities around 6600 to 6700. He prepared a schedule for Referee John Montgomery.

Goggins Wins Mortgage Case Over Bank

John L. Goggins defeated Citizens National Bank of Sedalia in a case over an $800 mortgage on cattle bought from Banks. The court found the mortgage description insufficient to locate the cattle and the check had been held for a month, voiding the bank’s claim. Attorneys included Cashman Bohling Rector for Goggins and Montgomery for the bank.
