Atlantic Transport Co contends the Mohegan disaster remains a mystery after 106 bodies recovered and 33 missing among passengers, with 51 missing crew and cattlemen. Tide of reports fluctuates as more bodies identified, while rescuers search amid rough seas and limited light.
Washington reports Gen Brooke says a Spanish transport with 300 men sails today. A second ship with Gen Macias and 1500 men sails tomorrow. A third vessel is expected on the 17th. Complete possession to be accomplished on the 18th.

A man named Charlton, visiting a house to confront Edwards over jealousy about a former marriage, was killed after a fight with Edwards who was one of the boarders. The incident followed a three year separation and Charlton’s wife hosting boarders.

Havana reports American officers discuss enlisting 75 000 to 100 000 Spanish soldiers under a special act to serve in Cuba until a stable government is formed. After service they would choose to remain in Cuba or return to Spain, with many preferring to become Cuban citizens and start new ventures.
A society to be known as the Society of the Army of Santiago de Cuba is forming in New York. It will resemble the G A R and seek 8000 members among officers and soldiers of the expeditionary force who fought in the Santiago campaign from June 14 to July 17. Key officers include Maj. Gen. W. R. Shafter as president and Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler as first vice president.
Santiago reports the Cuban assembly at Santa Cruz fixes October 20 for its meeting but lacks transport to reach on time. The delay likely pushes the election of a president and cabinet to the end of the month.
