Sedalia residents push mining fever as Benton county districts near Hanbury show multiple shafts, promising ore tests, and plans for leases. Local investors form companies, install jig tanks, and anticipate shipments and smelter expansion as rail gauges and regional development loom.
The Long Distance Telephone Company announced another rate reduction, cutting charges for long distance calls. The move follows previous reductions and aims to attract more customers while lowering communication costs nationwide.
A new long distance rate schedule cuts most rates in half effective today. Sedalia to major centers drops from 2.00 to 1.00 during the day and 0.50 after 6 pm. Calls to Omaha Hannibal and St Louis become affordable with 75 45 and 50 cent options. The system promises easier scheduling via central and wide west network coverage from Houston to Minneapolis with Texas lines completed.
The state Christian Endeavor convention at Springfield scheduled for October 27 to 29 is postponed due to a smallpox scare and will be held December 3 to 10.
Miss Mamie Emrich is hosted by friends in Warrensburg, enjoying a visit with local acquaintances and the community during her stay.
W. Y. Evans former Hickory county sheriff and longtime Pettis county Democrat dies at home in Lamonte after a stroke. He previously ran a Dresden Lamonte grain business. His grandson is Gus Agee and County Treasurer Ferguson is a brother in law.
Frank Clemens and Wilbur Beaman each fined five dollars by Police Judge Burress for drunkenness. They were jailed. R.8. Humphreys involved for exposing actions not completed in readable portion.
Strout received five days in jail from Justice Rogers for trespassing after a family fight on Main street. William Hubbard Dora Hub bard and Dan Jennings were fined 2 5 and 10 dollars respectively for disturbing the peace. The record notes a 5 cent fine for an unnamed individual who paid no fines.
Harvey Dow, a local lawyer, reports his bay horse and new black box buggy stolen from in front of the First Methodist Church on West Fourth at 7:30 p.m. Dow, who tied the horse himself, hunted for ten minutes but found no clue. The horse is valued at about 75 dollars, with several wire-cut scars, and the harness and buggy gear were lost. Police and constables investigate amid a spate of recent horse thefts and talk of forming a vigilance committee.
Woodmen of the World local camp No. 16 plans a memorial day event next Sunday. Delegations from camps in central Missouri are invited including Boonville Beaman Clifton Goodies Mill Sweet Springs Holden Ladue Nevada Pilot Grove and Schell City. Delegations will form at 10 30 parade to the cemetery for a wedge around frames and Evans monuments. A P M Gross will read a poem a ritual will be read a choir will sing and Frienmels Military Band will play sacred music before the monuments are unveiled.
A church association meeting in Kansas City covered regional church activities and cooperative efforts. Leaders announced committee appointments and upcoming events affecting congregations across the area.
Representatives from thirteen Kansas City area Congregational churches gather at Second Congregational church for annual association. Delegates elect officers, hear Benevolence reports and Dr Henry Hopkins talk on international council, then proceed with a full two day program including education, missions and Sunday school topics.
A large crowd heard Rev. Putman last evening at the First Christian Church and the meeting will run through the week. Three accessions to church membership were recorded, with a cordial invitation extended to all to attend. The Cumberland Presbyterian Church plans a Harvest Home service next Sunday morning with autumn leaf and cereal decorations and a sermon by Rev. Shepherd.
Deputies from Sedalia escort Charles Funk and Charlie Tissue, Sedalia counterfeiters, to Jefferson City for trial. Peter Arden and Henry Bremmer face liquor and counterfeit charges. Wilson Smith from Georgetown also stands trial. Local officials accompany the defendants. a sizable Sedalia delegation accompanies the case.
A rough group described as Indian horse traders arrives in the city causing concerns of security. Authorities consider strict action and possible removal from the area to protect public safety.
